I'm looking for a compact (1/2 rack width or smaller) mic preamp unit that has at least 2 mic inputs and can fit easily in a backpack with other gear for remote recording sessions using a Tascam 414 MkII portastudio. M Audio's "Audio Buddy" seems to be popular among some people on this site, but not for others. I have seen on some of the retailers' sites a product by SM Pro Audio, the SMPR4V, a small (1/2 rack width) 4-channel mic preamp with phantom power. It's the same price as the Audio Buddy. SM Pro Audio is an Australian company that I had not heard of before.

Does anyone have experience with the SMPR4V or has anyone seen a review of it? I am wondering how it stacks up against the Audio Buddy. I did as thorough a search here as I could but came up empty.

Also, is there anything else on the market that is equally small/compact, has at least 2 mic inputs, but produces higher sound quality than the Audio Buddy, given that the latter has received some criticism?

Thanks.

Should I post this on "microphones"? (maybe the "bump" will help.)

Thx.

Why not the DMP3? I had one and liked it a lot. I sold it and am now using the preamps in my Motu 8pre but I think the DMP3 actually sounded better..

It is small and sounds great.

Thanks. The DMP3 looks like a great solution. Reviews seem really good, the price is right, and I like the fact that it has VU meters.
