Once again, I didn't even know it was posted or I'd have gotten to it much sooner.

First: I think SLuiCe is one of the most talented writers here. I've always sought out his tunes since "The Passing" It was a pleasure to work on this and Chrysalis and I'm sure there will be more; or at least I hope so.

Good mix man.....the tone on the sax is just right and I like the solo you ended up choosing. Nice job my friend.

Now...as to the music career decision. I'm 51 and I made the decision long ago that music was my life. I've paid my bills with it and had some amazing experiences. I've played and jammed with big-name guys and lived on the road for years traveling from Chicago to Mexico to Florida...sometimes in the same week. I've benefited as a player because the only way to get good is to play all the time and I've done that. An awful lot of guys my age have
lost a lot of their chops and often don't care about it anymore; certainly they never practice. I have avoided that. I play 3-4 nights a week and on my nights off I'll often take my horn or guitar and go jam. Since I'm well known around here I can play pretty much with whoever I want so I get to play a lot. I even play in a band with my 22 year old daughter. It's mostly stuff like Stone-Temple Pilots, Heart, Pat Benatar, Sheryl Crowe and so-on. It's so exciting at my age to play with all young players and play young music for young people. I'm a very fortunate man but there is a downside....

The odds of making a lot of money are virtually nil. I've done ok and I certainly broke the $300 a week barrier but as for things like a retirement, health insurance and so on.....forget it. If it weren't for the fact that I lucked into the buisiness of tuning pianos for churches I would have nothing. That and my wife has a great job and makes a lot more money than I.
And if you choose music as a life......you probably won't have the family thing that other people have. I've seen it over and over....musicians getting divorced because they neglect their families. Or the other way it goes is as the family takes precedence....you lose the music. You simply can't play at a high level unless you play all the time. My first marraige failed and I vowed never to remarry. I stayed single for 13 years but fortunately for me I met a wonderful woman who has her own career and is comfortable with me playing so much. It helps that she knows she can totally trust me to behave. It also helps that she doesn't want kids. Kids and playing music aren't really that compatible. It can be done but it's hard.

So to me.....you should only choose the music route if you just love it so much that you can't live without doing it. I've played pro for 38 years and I still get as excited every night about playing as I did when I was 12. I'd take nothing for it....but it didn't come for free. There are substantial prices to pay to be a player all your life.

Forgive my rambling....and I'm not even drunk! :D

Great job SLuiCe!!! :):)

Oh man, thank you Steve! You and I think alot alike.

I just haven't made sense of it yet :)

interesting post by Lt. However, he has passed a couple of hurdles which can be hard to do...but are well worth shooting for. First, he is a damn good player, so he can gig how/where he wants (it appears). That isn't common for many musicians playing "POP" MUSIC (as that is what I am just going to call this clinic stuff for now...), on a scale compared to all that are trying. Sometimes chops aren't just enough...for some sad reason.

Also, the pno tuning gig seems perfect.

In addition to the LT's resume, you can always teach, write, session play, jingles.... all that kinda stuff which can GREATLY add to the wallet.

my $300/wk seemed to come from splitting band paychecks with 4 other guys, a sound guy and some cheapie roadies. The studio engineering stuff was $10/hr... maybe $25 as a player... This WAS the 70's now too!!

I tried HARD to get some good advertising company gigs (they paid GREAT), but where hard to come by.. I only could freelance and that wasn't enough.
enuff ramblings...but fun to think/reflect/wish/talk about...

If you own that building company btw, can't you just delegate while you record at home??!!;)

this turned into a pretty serious thread.. very good stuff.

I feel pretty dumb having posted stupidity on it..

Now THAT's an afterthought! And a good one at that! But if I am anything like my father, I wouldn't be able to let go of the reigns long enough to get any recording done. You're absolutely right about Steve... He's paid his dues. And when I hear his music, I know it was worth it. The sax solo of his that I chose for this song I chose because it felt like reaching.

Please...it needs to get back to the fun stuff! :D

more smiling pot leaves please!

Shoot Sam..............you're a big part of the heart and soul of this forum. I think everyone looks forward to your input and as for myself; the walking leaf was awesome! :D DOn't change and please keep adding your veiwpoint to things. OK SLuiCe.....I'll quit monopolizing your thread!

Really! I will!!! :D:D:D

Great song. Really great. As for it being a simple song, that expression "makes it look easy" comes to mind. Nice job on the drums.

Hey,
I gave it a few listens, very nice guys.
that sax has just the perfect amount of verb on it.

You all sound like very experienced musicians so i won't bore you with what a youngun thinks - but what i will say is - Liked it!

oh shush....you turkey...

You probably wrote, recorded and mp3 encoded an entire new song while you were reading this rubbish...

so....where's the song?? you've set your own standard.

btw...can you make the walking leaf your avatar?...that was about the coolest gif I've seen.
;)

Hey Tom,
....Yeah, I like that better. It sounds like you brought the level up a hair too..... sounds better to my ear. The harmonics are clearer and you can hear a little string noise...... I like that.

Speaking of avatars..... Mixmkr, Im digging your new one..... that is one happy pooch.

.......and again.......speaking of avatars, I havent had one comment on the punk rock carrot. ........ :(

Sluice is belittling Hollywood by ripping off movie posters, Sam is demonstrating as a proponent for illegal drug use, ....all im trying to do is make sure kids get their vitamin A....... .......and their punk rock?.... ...!:D :D

God bless the punk rock carrot:( (sniff)

It has the theme of the Scott Tansley veggie group. I like it.

Talk about late... well for what its worth I really liked the song too... very dynamic and live and kinda earthy... very cool.

Wow, reading all these life histories is very humbling. I too considered following a music career for about 6 months. I quickly realised it was a tough way to live though and followed my interests in engineering. I've got so many really over qualified friends that are scratchin around for work... I can't understand it. Why do universities churn out so many degees in music if there's no jobs ?? It's quite bizzare.

But look on the upside... this internet collaboration stuff has got to be the best thing since sliced bread. Finally computers are paying back for all the pain they cause ;) Seriously... where else can you collaborate with a group of pro musicians for free. People get such a buzz out of it and rightly so. I'm hooked :)
