Collaboration with Guernica and Lt. Bob

Good morning everyone. :)

Sam- thanks for giving it the second listen, but I have no idea what you're talking about with the different levels and "remix". I didn't change anything except to yank the two accompanying sax parts that were only like 3 seconds long. Strange that that would make it sound like a remix. I don't hear any difference in the 2 MP3's myself...

Participant- hehe R&B! You know I like to do different things. This is a REALLY old song that I wanted to have some fun with, and these guys really added some life to it. I never really learned many covers, so when I'd be at a party and someone would say "Play something you little asshole" (or something along those lines), this is what I'd pull out.
Ya, I know I can get other hi hat sounds, but if I really do try to take this stuff to any other level, I'll just get a real drummer. I use the keyboard drums for writing purposes. Good enough for now as far as I'm concerned...cuz when I get a good hi hat, then it will just be a problem with the snare and on and on until I shoot myself in the face.
I don't know what frog sticks are, but some of the vocals gave me quite a challenge. You mentioned in mbuster's thread something about I must be taking vocals lessons. I appreciate that comment, but no lessons, but I've started paying more attention to vocals...I've stopped using the excuse that I'm not actually a singer and decided to try and actually learn it! And it is fun, feels nice, and it's forcing me into a lot of other styles than I'm used to by doing these different collaborations. Thanks for the ears as always, Chad.

jcmm- glad this one struck you man. Sounds like you like it....thank you very much. It's a fun song. It's in C Sharp minor if you want to learn it :)

mixmkr-

What bothers me, is that the high level of musicianship that is between the three of you isn't showing like I would hope it would

First off, let me say that a lot of what I've learned about recording I learned when I started coming here and getting ripped by you. It's very helpful.
Well, I can't speak for Mike and Steve, but even though this is a kinda simple sounding tune, I found it to be very challenging vocally (my singing obviously is far from professional anyway), and the acoustic guitar actually left my finger muscles sore. It's hard to sustain that fingering for 3 1/2 mintues or so. While I appreciate your comparison to professional level CD's, I don't know what I myself have done to make you think I'm any better than this and to raise your expectations so high. I also thought Mike and Steve's parts were perfect for this, or else I would have asked them to try again.
This is not as easy to play as it is simple sounding. Cover it.
And just in case that response sounds harsh, I'll agree with your B+ rating. :) That part I understand.

Guernica- Thank you very much for your bass on this. I know you didn't have the best mix to record your parts to. I had too many projects going at once and should have given you a proper mix. I just didn't want to restrict you in any way, while still giving you the outline. But personally, this doesn't bother me at all. I did in fact boost around 4-600k by about a dB to sharpen it up a bit. I also had to roll off just about everything from 40K down. The mix had a lot of "King of the Mountain" being played by the guitar vocal AND the bass around 170k. Bass is tricky because different systems deliver bass very differently. I'm still trying to find the right balance from these monitors that makes it work for all systems. I actually liked the mixed saxes (I'll include that version on the CD I'll send you of this), but I know it's
probably too experimental for the board, and rather than have to answer to it, I pulled it. :D Great bass line brotha...thanks ! My Dad loved the bass and sax parts! But he still wouldn't invest in me :( Maybe a v2 I'll be able to better define your part without you having to retrack it. But like I said, I'm hearing it in the mix loud and clear, and I've heard it naked!

Chris- Actually I hardly ever get asked how I do things so don't worry about it. :) The guitar varies a lot from song to song. It just depends on how full the rest of the mix is, and if it's clashing with anything else. I almost always have to make a cut around 170kHz. This is where a lot of my vox reside, and the bass jumps in there a lot too as I mentioned to Mike. The guitar here is one stereo track- one mic was placed about 2 feet in front of the sound hole slightly to the left of it (my left). The other mic was placed about 18 inches from the nut pointing toward the soundhole. My theory was that it would be pursuing the fullness of the soundhole, but pick up some of those highs along the neck on its way. In the mix there is a high shelf boost of about 1db from 4Hz up. Hope that I ramble too much for ya :D

powderfinger- thanks the listen man!

Crawdad- maybe we're using the same monitors :) Thanks for the feedback sir.

Theron- hey man thanks for swinging by...glad you dug it.

Thanks to everyone for honest opinions. Keeps it real!!!!

Nick, I just posted at the same time...
I think I know exactly what you mean. Ya know that makes a lot of sense. I'll keep that in mind for sure when I remix this, Thanks for the idea!

and I am sure you are probably right. People who play [difficult] things well are very often the ones that make playing look very easy too. However...whether you like it or not(!!!), you've graduated [quickly in my book] to the level where you have to get really anal and picky about stuff to even come up with comments. Your stuff, including this colab, is among the best stuff I have ever heard[from an unsigned band] on the internet. When I see a new post by you, I am eager to hear it, and have to get out the magnifying glass to see any [potential?] flaws. And.....possibly like Jeff, I get mesmerized when I hear guitar stuff that I go; "holy $h!t"....."did you hear that shredding in that solo!!!" But, I also realize that guitar solos (and technique?) are probably the least favorite things people like to listen to in the clinic (next to drum solos...maybe??...but you don't hear those often, ...eh? ). It seems the clinic is geared (as it should be) towards recording sonics, song structure?, general musicianship (like do you hear mistakes), and just general feedback on whatever 'floats your boat', at the time.

anywayzz...as a muscian/singer...you're a 10 in my book overall, VS the (lousy) B+ rating some jerk gave on a particular song, a couple threads back.

Sam- I like the fiery red avatar...very cool.

Mixmkr- Thank you very much for taking the time to clarify that. I'm going through the "do I want to try to make more of this than fun" stage again in my life. And we all know the sort of sacrifices that entails. Sell the truck, quit the weed, give the cats your dinner, tell your father that in fact you do not want the family business... 28 and facing decisions I should have faced more directly 8-10 years ago. Thanks for monitoring me (and others) like you do.

Sounds great!

Horns sound really fine!
I really like the acoustic playing, sweet!
Bass is right on!
The vocals are great,as always!
Everything sounds perfect through my pc speakers.
Excellent job!

I had a question,if you don't mind.
With the cd exchange through the mail, were the tracks cd audio tracks or wav.?
The LT sent you 13 tracks with his stuff on one side and the original on the other, for all 13 tracks?
I'm just wondering how they got burned and how you got them off the cd into your computer?
(Man,I ask a lot of questions!):D

This is really great for a collab, sounds like they were all recorded together!

Thanks for sharing it,
Pete

Hey Pete- I believe they were CDA's that I converted to WAV's after extracting them. Thanks for the listen!

Tom...... my poor brutha.......
.......I read the post above and couldnt help but feel a little sorry for you. That decision is a tough one, .....do I stay or do I go...... Should I persue a "safer" life that is much more likely to give me things that i "do" want..........(family, money.........a life)
........or should I be true to my heart and see what Im destined to be..........
I felt your pain at exactly your age man (a teacher in college once told me 27/28 is when a man really grows up:rolleyes: :p :D) ..... thats when I got out of music/touring..
.....went to school....
... started a business......
...got married....
......bought a home........

.........and have been unsure of the decision ever since:rolleyes: :)

........good luck my man

Mike

Tough decisions...and unfortunately no one but yourself can help you make those. Guernica and I sounds like we had some similar time frames in our life too....a lot happening at the 25-35 yr range...for sure. The stuff you are probably going thru right now, as you described it.

I'll make one comment(s) (that I HAVE the right to change to the opposite now...ok?) on what I might do...looking back. Without plunging blindly into music, and trying to "support" myself with it totally...which I "kinda" did as a musician/engineer/dope smoker....I would not be the musically "happy" person I am now. I could see that music might have 'disappeared' had I pursued a 'real' career....but probably not, I would think. But...LOOKING BACK, I might have taken the "real" career then and done music on the side, until the music took off... But, my trouble was, I kept thinking my band, engineer gigs, guitar session stuff...etc.. WHERE going to take off. Even had a little taste of what I call "B level" national exposure. However, I couldn't make it past the $300/week level, no matter how I tried. A couple weeks got lucky, played some proms, and stuff like that. But the $300 level seemed to be it. Enough to say.."hey, I'm doing ok"...but not really enough to support house payments, and shit like that. So....tough decisions.

Boy..didn't mean to ramble...but I guess I am saying...hey..take the family job...unless it just sucks... support yourself first, let the job equip you musically and allow you to do things "right", and see what happens. I suppose musically, this is the "pussy" way to go...and you'll never make it unless you are "hungry" and entirely commit yourself to it. ...but... tuff calls...

about the weed...personal decision. I think I spent the 70's stoned and loved to record...but needed the weed to be "creative."...I thought. haven't touched it since I bought a house and started some serious equipment collecting...about 20 years ago. I've thought it would be ok to get high on New Years..whenever...but I kinda like the idea that I haven't smoked in such a long time now...and don't want to break the trend.

anyway....good luck...and for sure...DON"T listen to me!! I change my mind on a daily basis!!

It's more than a mix clinic...it's a therapy group, isn't it...

If it was a different job, it would be easier to do both. But it's building...and it sucks the life out of ya...from your brain to your muscles. Now if I had a less draining job, I'd have more strength left over for music and I'd go get another band tonight and practice 4 nights a week.

Maybe we could all sell advertizing for this site and quit our regular jobs. And start a band. And then an island community.

By the way mixmkr, I don't write much stoned. Mostly work on things on the road. Stuff I write stoned gets tossed usually!

Bless you guys!
