Good morning everyone.
Sam- thanks for giving it the second listen, but I have no idea what you're talking about with the different levels and "remix". I didn't change anything except to yank the two accompanying sax parts that were only like 3 seconds long. Strange that that would make it sound like a remix. I don't hear any difference in the 2 MP3's myself...
Participant- hehe R&B! You know I like to do different things. This is a REALLY old song that I wanted to have some fun with, and these guys really added some life to it. I never really learned many covers, so when I'd be at a party and someone would say "Play something you little asshole" (or something along those lines), this is what I'd pull out.
Ya, I know I can get other hi hat sounds, but if I really do try to take this stuff to any other level, I'll just get a real drummer. I use the keyboard drums for writing purposes. Good enough for now as far as I'm concerned...cuz when I get a good hi hat, then it will just be a problem with the snare and on and on until I shoot myself in the face.
I don't know what frog sticks are, but some of the vocals gave me quite a challenge. You mentioned in mbuster's thread something about I must be taking vocals lessons. I appreciate that comment, but no lessons, but I've started paying more attention to vocals...I've stopped using the excuse that I'm not actually a singer and decided to try and actually learn it! And it is fun, feels nice, and it's forcing me into a lot of other styles than I'm used to by doing these different collaborations. Thanks for the ears as always, Chad.
jcmm- glad this one struck you man. Sounds like you like it....thank you very much. It's a fun song. It's in C Sharp minor if you want to learn it

First off, let me say that a lot of what I've learned about recording I learned when I started coming here and getting ripped by you. It's very helpful.
Well, I can't speak for Mike and Steve, but even though this is a kinda simple sounding tune, I found it to be very challenging vocally (my singing obviously is far from professional anyway), and the acoustic guitar actually left my finger muscles sore. It's hard to sustain that fingering for 3 1/2 mintues or so. While I appreciate your comparison to professional level CD's, I don't know what I myself have done to make you think I'm any better than this and to raise your expectations so high. I also thought Mike and Steve's parts were perfect for this, or else I would have asked them to try again.
This is not as easy to play as it is simple sounding. Cover it.
And just in case that response sounds harsh, I'll agree with your B+ rating.
That part I understand.
Guernica- Thank you very much for your bass on this. I know you didn't have the best mix to record your parts to. I had too many projects going at once and should have given you a proper mix. I just didn't want to restrict you in any way, while still giving you the outline. But personally, this doesn't bother me at all. I did in fact boost around 4-600k by about a dB to sharpen it up a bit. I also had to roll off just about everything from 40K down. The mix had a lot of "King of the Mountain" being played by the guitar vocal AND the bass around 170k. Bass is tricky because different systems deliver bass very differently. I'm still trying to find the right balance from these monitors that makes it work for all systems. I actually liked the mixed saxes (I'll include that version on the CD I'll send you of this), but I know it's
probably too experimental for the board, and rather than have to answer to it, I pulled it.
Great bass line brotha...thanks ! My Dad loved the bass and sax parts! But he still wouldn't invest in me
Maybe a v2 I'll be able to better define your part without you having to retrack it. But like I said, I'm hearing it in the mix loud and clear, and I've heard it naked!
Chris- Actually I hardly ever get asked how I do things so don't worry about it.
The guitar varies a lot from song to song. It just depends on how full the rest of the mix is, and if it's clashing with anything else. I almost always have to make a cut around 170kHz. This is where a lot of my vox reside, and the bass jumps in there a lot too as I mentioned to Mike. The guitar here is one stereo track- one mic was placed about 2 feet in front of the sound hole slightly to the left of it (my left). The other mic was placed about 18 inches from the nut pointing toward the soundhole. My theory was that it would be pursuing the fullness of the soundhole, but pick up some of those highs along the neck on its way. In the mix there is a high shelf boost of about 1db from 4Hz up. Hope that I ramble too much for ya
powderfinger- thanks the listen man!
Crawdad- maybe we're using the same monitors
Thanks for the feedback sir.
Theron- hey man thanks for swinging by...glad you dug it.
Thanks to everyone for honest opinions. Keeps it real!!!!

What bothers me, is that the high level of musicianship that is between the three of you isn't showing like I would hope it would
