I have a problem here that I need some pro's to help me on....Im about to add on to the back of my house...I want a 16 X 48 deck and I want to build a 15 X 24 live room under the deck. The only problem is that with the ammount of vertical room I have available, I can only get, AT MOST, a 7ft ceiling in the live room, and that will have to slope off to allow runoff from any water that leaks through the deck. The deck would not rest on the roof of the room, but there would be very little room between them. I dont feel like I will be happy with the low ceiling, so Im wondering if I should just pass on the room and build my deck and keep my current recording set-up, or if I should build the room with the low ceiling and treat the hell out of it. I currently have 2 rooms, a 13 X 13 and a 13 X 22, which do not share a common wall. There is a hallway between the 2 rooms.

here is a link to a thread where I show a drawing of the rooms..

when you look at the drawing, the room on the left is the one I want to add onto. if you were sitting at the desk in the drawing, the addition would be to your right and would be the length of the room plus the 2 closets on the far end, and since they would share a wall, I could put up a window for a more professional look and feel...

any thoughts that anyone could offer would be great...

Well...
As you know, a room with a 7ft ceiling isn't going to have what we typically think of as a "live" sound to it.... but if all you really want is to have a room where you could set up more musicians and record them all at once, you could certainly get by with treating the room...
I think the question really is.... do you want more space or are you trying to get a certain sound by building the room? You can gain more space, for sure, with a low ceiling. But getting that big room sound will be another story. On the other hand... how about skipping the deck, or putting the deck next to the new live room? Or, you could build a multi-use "sun room," with big cathedral ceilings and lots and lots of windows..... use it as an outdoor-ish space and record in it when it's time to do a session....

Good luck!
