clipping problem

Sometimes when I add effects on certain tracks or eq, it starts to get distorted and make popping sounds. I assume it is doing this because it is clipping so I decrease the decibals of the track and it still clips...I decrease it again and it still clips..I even solo the track and lower the volume so I can barley hear it and it still distorts!!! Why is that? It's like the distoring is now permantly on there and I can't get rid of it. How can I clear up the popping sounds made after adding effects or eq?

Are you adding the FX destructively or non-destructively?

If you added them destructively, you won't get rid of the distortion by lowering the volume, you'll just get lower distortion. It's kind of like drinking coffee when you're drunk, you don't get less drunk, just more wide awake.

Try adding your FX non-destructively until you get the sound you want. After they sound they way you want them, then you can "apply" them.

In fact, if you have enough computing horsepower, leave them as realtime FX. That way you can always change them later - when you find out that what sounded good last night, sounds pretty crappy the next morning.

One other suggestion (from the wisdom of others on this forum, not me). When you use EQ try lowering the settings rather than raising them - e.g., if you want more bass, lower the high frequencies, etc.

Adding an effect to the wave form in the audio view adds the effect destructively which "permanetly" adds the effect to the audio track and you can't change it later, (so if the effect distorts lowering the volume isn't going to make any difference because the distorted signal is now part of the track). While adding an effect in the console view adds the effect non-destructively in a "non-permanent" way to where it doesn't effect the actual data of the track (like running the signal through an aux channel to the effect and then back again) you can change the effect many times before you commit to the sound you want.

I'm assuming you are using CW PA9. In that case, check the online help under "effects:realtime".

IOW, RTFM.
