I have a bellari rp282 tube comp that clips so easily. there is either barely any reduction or massive clipping on either channel. would getting new tubes solve the problem. Is there any thing that could fix the problem?

Tell us more...

What kinds of sounds are most affected by the problem?

If they're low frequency, the problem might be the settings. When the attack or release time is shorter than one cycle of the note being played/sung, the compression sounds like distortion.

The cure might be as simple as setting longer attack and release times. Even in my limited experience, I've tripped over this. Try backing off the dials and let us know what happens.

Also, make sure your cables are clean, well seated, and free of corrosion. If the unit isn't under warranty, pop it open and check all the internal connectors, including the tube sockets. Caig Laboratories (http://www.caig.com/) makes some great contact cleaners, and their ProGold line is rated for the high temperatures found in tube gear.

Check for a +4/-10 switch on the back, it might be set at -10 when it should be at +4.

thanks, but it still happens even with the attack and release at a longer setting. I opened it up and could not see anything wrong. all lines in and out are unbalanced as are the cables. I have been using it on drums. Both channels crap out on the kick, snare, and overheads. If i remember correctly I have used it on vocals and bass with out any problems
