clean signal layered over distortion

David "The Tone God" Gilmour does the clean signal/dirty signal split, but uses two separate amps. Seems like that's what the Sparkle Drive approximates, which is good, since most of us can't haul around two amps. I believe I should check this out...
 
okay ive created a simpler setup idea to do this. what do you guys think of this is idea?

this eliminates any colouration of signal from mixer and DI box. then i can mic the amp. i read a vunch of reviews on the whirlwind selectors and they do not colour the signal. HOWEVER when you split the signal (using the both button), there is a little bit of signal loss. do you guys see this as being a problem?
