I need a good couple of mics for micing guitar and bass amps, acoustic guitars, and vocals for recording through SONAR.

My budget is 400 max. this covers mics, pres, and anything else.

I have heard of these models: c1000, NT1, sm 57, MXL 57m.
I am pretty set on getting a 57 for micing the amps, but am still not sure what to get for vocals and acoustic guitar. Large or small diapragm condensor? as cheap as possible.

ALso, for preamps. I am looking at the art tupe mp and the m audio audio buddy.

and for soundcards. my soundcard is crappy. would an external one through the usb port work alright? what is a good, reliable, cheap model?

Hey spect,

save your money and buy better equipment...... you know what, where are we newbies

ok, listen down in the hip hop section, actually no right here I am gonna start a post for you...hold on

Spectrewhite, you sent me a private message, but I am unable to respond because you have your "incoming" messages blocked. If you still want help, go into your profile and unblock incoming messages.

Just to throw out suggestions, I'd go:

Pre amp: M-Audio Audio Buddy $80
Small omni condensor: Behringer ECM 8000 $35
Small condensor: Marshall MXL 603, $75
Large condensor: Studio Projects B-1 $80
Dynamic: SM=57, $80

Use different combos for micing acoustic guitar, use the SM-57 on the amps and try any of the condensors as room mics. The Audio Buddy is also a DI box, so you can experiment with that sound.

That gives you some left over for cables and stands.

Preamp/Mic's

Mic's and pre's are the gateway to good sound.
I know you only have 400$ but the pre is important!
I recommend a Joemeek vc3 (i believe thats's the model#)
I retails for 300$ new. Get a used one off ebay for like 175 I hope.
Next get your sm57 for a great all around mic including drums and guitar amps. New is 80$. Lets say you paid 50.
That leaves you 175 for a vocal mic. I don't have many to recommend but I know you can get a large diaphram used vocal mic for that. The key in this 400$ setup is a lot of bang for the buck in all 3 pieces and only 3 pieces. You could record an entire drum kit with the sm57 in the can and the vocal mic overhead. I would use the preamp for the overhead and any channel pre in any pa or mixer you have for the foot.
For the $ that joemeek is a killer little pre (I believe with compresssion)
good luck

spectre, if it were me I'd probably get for under $400;

1) Joe Meek MQ3-street price-$200 (mic pre/compressor/EQ)
2) Shure SM57 $ 80
3) Studio Projects B1 $ 80

The MQ3 is an enhancement over the prior VC3 and VC3Q
mainly due to the new "current sense" feature it has.
The website at www.joemeek.com has further details.

I think that Magpie99's suggestions are excellent,if I were in your shoes I would go with everything that Glenn listed.

I give Chessrock's suggestions my nod. (and the MXL 67 LD condenser is great for vocals) :)
