Armistice

Son of Yoda
So I'm doing a video for work for an in-house "short film festival" and it features a squirrel jumping all over the joint in the footage... we were going to fade titles in over said squirrel at various points (there's a music track too) but then I got to thinking, "Why don't we use a chipmunk voice instead"

Unfortunately I actually said this out loud and the rest of the project team looked at me and said ""Make it so, number one.."

Now... how do I do it?

Is there a "make my voice sound like a chipmunk" VST? Apart from speaking slowly and speading the audio up, I can't really think of how to do this... anyone ever turned speech into chipmunk voice?

I haven't tried anything yet as I'm at work at the moment, but I need to have edited chipmunk voices into the video within 24 horus from now, so any tips that can save me wasting time working it out would be appreciated!

Cheers guys...

I dunno if you have Melodyne or not, but if you do, it's as simple as using the formant tool (and possibly the pitch tool as well), and just increasing the value.

Anything that can edit formants and pitch separately should be able to work just fine. You may even be able to just download the Melodyne demo, use it for this purpose, and then print the track to audio so you wouldn't lose the effect when the demo ran out of time.

Reaper / Audacity Crows

I looked at the Melodyne download but I think I'd still be downloading it at midnight the way my internet connection is at the moment, and still working out how to use it by the time I had to go to work....

I know Reaper's got a pitch thing in there somewhere but I haven't used it yet - which is what seafroggys has suggested.

Hey mate

If you know someone with Logic, take the tracks over there and use the vocal transformer. It has formant shifting to create a more 'realistic' outcome of extreme pitch shifting.

Or use a standard pitch shifter without formant adjustment for a slightly funnier outcome...you can probably do that in Reaper....ah yes with "ReaPitch"

Dags

Yeah, I don't have Reaper on this computer but go to the audio clip on the timeline, right click, its toward the top...something like audio properties, and there's an option to alter pitch by semitone.

LOL - at least I've learnt what "formant" is today!

No time to hunt a Logic user down Dags alas.... I'll try ReaPitch ... or what Seafroggys has said there - they may be the same thing...

And "funny sounding" is good for chipmunks, I reckon...

Cheers

I got different pitch tools in Pro-tools. If You don't have any luck with the Reaper tools I can give it try if You want?

Put the vocal part in the sequencer in Reaper, click it so it's selected, hit F2 to show its properties, then you can type into a little box on the dialog that appears how many semitones up or down Reaper should play that part.

Feel free to upload the .wav part you want squirrelified and one of us can shift it and send it back.

Audition does it easily...you could avail yourself of the 28 day free trial.

Otherwise, I'm also happy to offer to do it for you if you upload a wave somewhere.

Hey polarity! you are in Jackson? Me too! Send me a P.M with your info. We prob know some of same folks. I am always looking to meet musicians/engineers/producers in this area. Back to OP, Reapitch will do the trick.

Yep - Apple thought it would be cool to put it in Garageband because people don't care (or even know) about good plugins; they just want to sound weird and have fun. You could give it to me as well and I could also do it for you. :D

LOL, I've sort of given up on the idea, although I haven't played it to anyone yet.... I think it might be fundamentally impossible for a person with a voice as low as mine to be turned into a convincing chipmunk!

I've been using ReaPitch. I might try just talking slowly and speeding it up tonight, perhaps, which will be my last chance as it's due for submission tomorrow.

Another LOL... I raced home, quickly set the microphone up.... did a take and listened and thought "Gee that sounds so distant and awful"... and for about 30 seconds I was scratching my head until I realised I'd faced the mic the wrong way around.... ha... I've NEVER done that before.... that'll teach me to hurry.... :D

I went old school... spoke s l o w l y and then sped it up... along with a touch of Reapitch ... much better!

I would have just had fun with a helium tank and recorded that in real time with no effects. :thumbs up:
