so even when mixing, the inserts are routed back into the signal path are convered? i ask because that's not the case with other interfaces that have inserts.

yeah, i use logic and also use plugins. but there is still some outboard analog gear i like to use. such as a stereo spring reverb and a few effect pedals.

I use the FW-1884 with Logic Platinum on a Mac G5. I route a Logic I/O plugin to the Tascams SP/DIF outputs (channels 17-18) into my outboard Lexicon MPX500, which also has SP/DIF. Works great. (You can use the analog outputs instead of SP/DIF is your gear is analog).

The only issue I have is being able to route an incoming signal to an external effect "live", such as thru an aux or bus. (ie: record vocals dry but monitor with reverb). However, I can do this routing in Logic so its not a major drawback.

This Tascam thing looks pretty good, but no eq or compression on the channels. And...once again, you're stuck with passing your good pres through the dang onboard pres. Same with the Yamaha. Unless you get another interface for the interface of course. Seems as though the Tascam would require a more buffed up computer than the Yamaha or the Digi 002 because you'd have to use your processing power for the eq and dynamics. And..looks like the 002 is the only controller/mixer ( I've seen ) so far that has simple analog lines in with no stinking preamps on them ( 4 ). Of course, I'm probably wrong about it all. I think I'm just going to wait a few months and let the reviews come in. If you get the Tascam or the Yamaha, you still have to get the software...by that time you've spent almost as much as for the 002 anyway. The Digi 002 is smelling like the best deal to me unless you want future expansion. Decisions....decisions. hmmmm maybe back to the standalone recorders....

unfortunately the firewire connection doesn't work, so i have a replacement coming ( i hope cuz i don't feel like owning the company in KY that sold it to me)
but customer support at TEAC is great, i called a couple times talked to different peops their service was good even if it didn't make it work at least i know that if i have a question someone will try to help

in the meantime i'm using it as a standalone and it sounds as nice if not better than my Q10

First, the FE-8 Control Ports must be activated in Sonar’s MIDI Devices window in order
for them to appear in the Control Surfaces window. The FE-8 Control Ports will become
available after Windows has detected the hardware and installed the driver for the FE-8.
In the Control Surfaces window (shown below) under the Options menu, Sonar provides
multiple slots to insert individual control surfaces. If you have one or more FE-8s
connected, each one will appear individually in the Add New Control Surface pull-down
menu when the yellow star icon is clicked. Add control surfaces in the order you want
them to match up with mixer faders from top to bottom in the Control Surfaces window.
Multiple FE-8s will be numbered & named according to their order and names in the FE-
8 tab of the control panel.
NOTE: Sonar must be restarted for changes in this window to take effect, even though
Sonar does not prompt for this.

The more I'm looking, the 1884 is looking better. May have to try it out with this Sonar. I'm hoping it doesn't whup me though. I'll be starting as a total newb with the PC platform. The prices will probably come down later on the extended boards...have to just wait them out. And I guess you could bypass the pres by getting an ADAT interface to run your amps through. I'm still waiting for some more reviews though before I plunk down the cash.

hi, hoping someone here might have some insight into general set up of the 1884. i just bought one the other day to replace my us428 and to use with ableton live. i can get most of the board running...faders, stop, play, rec, pan knobs, etc. and recording works fine. i'm lacking two major things though...one is ff/rew control, either via the ff/rew buttons or scrubbing with the dial. the ableton live interface has no ff/rew buttons, so there's nothing i can attach a midi message to. the other problem is that none of the leds will respond to changes in the program. even when the buttons are controlling mute/solo, etc. the leds don't light up to match the action in the software. again, this may be a limitation in midi communication, but the faders respond to the software (i.e. the 'real' faders move when i move the 'virtual' ones with the mouse) so it seems that the leds could respond as well.
right now this is all done in machine control mode with mackie control emulation, as i can't get live to respond to the 1884 when its in midi mode. does anyone have an insight into the best way to get the two to communicate most effectively? is there a way to set it up in midi mode so that all functions work correctly? i've really got no idea if its possible.

everything is working with the triton and the rs7k , i just haven't connected it to cubase yet , no recording right now anyway .plus it's too bad school started and i need to build momentum here by doing some school reading before i dive into the manuals

question to the 1884 owners.

what type of firewire does it use.. would it be capable with say a sony vaio thats got a "iLink"? the iLink port is the same size as the firewire that goes to a sony digital 8 camcorder.

and also does the 1884 feel as cheap as the 122? i mean i know they packed a lotta shit into this thing but i feel like ima break the damn thing everytime i use it.

Firewire and ilink are both names for the IEEE 1394 standard, so yes as long as it is a 6 pin connector is should be fine.

I've had mine for a few weeks now and although I've never used the 122 I can tell you that the 1884 is a sturdy box.

the mainunit FW-1884 is great, but the faderbox fe-8 is what I don´t need. They should have put some inputs in it.
If I only need a lot of faders I can take the new US-2400 ...
