Thanks for the info. I'd love to hear a piano recording with the DAV if you have one. The DAV and your choice of mics sound nice on the guitar.

Gefells are amazing mics , for sure(and on anything, i might add :D ). When my inverter gets here....I have a run of jazz concerts and symphonies, and my wife plays piano, so I may try to convince her to do a piece for me.

No color...big sound? The Millenia with the option to switch out the transformers immediately comes to mind...you get the best of both worlds..I prefer transformers in all my pres with different breeds for different sounds..impedance matching for mics is a big deal. Have you heard the GT Vipre? Changing the input impedance changes the sounds of a single mic a ton...Most of the classical, big band and jazz recordings I own and enjoy were made long before the era of the IC chip (and the transistor for that matter!)... I see you have a Spectrasonics 610 in your romm xstatic..Boy that brings back memories..A room I worked in a while back had a few...really quirky but great on some things..I have a pair of SS 101's that I racked as pre's....they sound good too...well off to roast the meat...Happy to all..I hope Santa brings some nice toys :)

I was reccomended the BG1 over the millenia emphatically. Said the BG1 sounded just as good at a fraction of the price.Havent heard the vipre..Ive heard the Hardy, the DW Fearn VT-2(loved it), millenia, avalon, grace(least favorite),portico, presonus adl600(liked a lot),dbx786(yum) and API.. interesting that you mention switchable transformers...
http://www.electronaut.info/ there is a really sexy preamp..he makes different transformer cards that you can swap in and out..The designer(Rob Roy Cambell)will even put whatever transformers you want in there....I will never spend over 2500 for a pre if I can help it..im thinking about getting the 4channel DAV, a neve portico and an electronaut.....

That Electronaut looks interesting, but do you really want to be carrying around a heavy three rack space monster to location gigs?

No..I never would. Id never used transformer based pres for classical recording anyway. DAV all the way...im sold on em. I will get an electronaut/hardy/portico for rock/acoustic music..but noway for classical, which is 95% of what i do, and want to keep doing..I just said it was pretty:) and a nice concept..he does have an introductory price of 1800 on em now though. Though im used to carrying a rucksack, and the preamp wouldnt be much different. gets old after awhile though.

now I know why you want the DAV samples of piano!! I just saw your website...

Well why dont you come do a few shows in Deutschland...Ill record you and then youll have some! :D

Plenty of venues! And a hungry public!

I am working on getting some piano concerts going in the EU, but it is in the very early stages and for my own convenience sake I'm starting with an English speaking country. Perhaps we should PM about the venues in Germany and the overall music scene for the type of thing I do. I was in the EU for most of October, touring as keyboardist with another artist, and I definitely felt my music would go over well there.

You may have mentioned this before in the thread, but which Gefell's are you using with the BG1?

Gefell MG200s(cardiods). the bodies are MV200s, and on those bodies you can put m20(card)m21(hyper) or m27(omni) capsules. VERY nice mics..the best SDC mics i have heard....I own 2 pairs.http://www.gefell-mics.com/grp_3_prod_2.htm

if anyone wants some..i get amazing discounts with gefell...

how much they go for now???(610s)15-1800 is my guess.

LOL...WhaT I am intersted in buying and what I can get by the wife are two entirely different things...That is why I learned to build classic pre's from schematics in the first place...I would love a 610 but it is just not versatile enough for me at this time..those dbx units are really nice too! I think I am going to build an 1176 shortly..my favorite classical recordings were done in the 50's with DX77's and old RCA pre's...no, not accurate at all (!) but pleasant sounding like the old Miles Davis stuff (Birth of the Cool, Blue...)...

Actually, I am asking $600 each for the Spectrasonics, but $850 for my REALLY old one (sn 612), and it will be back any day from bein retored (Spectrasonics is only40 miles from me).

I live in Argentina... I found the guy who is making it on ebay. (If you want, i can ask him if he´s selling overseas...)
He took the 1272 schematic and decided to make it. (no IC based clone, btw)
And guess what... because of currency change, the amps costs only 200 bucks! :D
Did u enjoy the sample?
Take a look, is pretty ugly! http://www.deremate.com.ar/user/images/909/9094588.jpg

there are no shortcuts Julian . what you get is what you pay for.
are they good transformers? that's what really counts in a circuit like that.

I know there´s no shortcuts Rodger, but bargain exist, too.
He makes the transformers... That way, he can deliver preamps at that price.
BTW, remember that currency change is different here... So, 200 dollars here is more money that you may think. Components, machinery, etc are cheaper too.
For illustrate that, one of the finest custom made drumkit brands here, sells his top of line kit for 1000 bucks... know what i mean?

The sample sound fine and i´ll go to his store to hear the amp...
I know is HARD and even kind of pointless speaking about the sound of a piece of gear just by listening some mp3, but is a good way to hear the pre in a mixed song context...
I would like to hear some opinions...

what is his name, and does he have a website???It seems fishy to me...(reminds me of those people when I was in Korea that made "nike" and tommy hilfiger" stuff") but who knows..

do you have contact info for him?

He´s a musician with electronics skills, he don´t even have a "brand name" or site or whatever... No tricks there.
I wanna pick one soon, ´cause i don´t how long is he going to keep producing units...
Hopefully i will post clips of my own Neve clone soon! ;)

I still don´t hear nothing about the clip i already posted... :(
