You're in Indy, does Sweetwater have a real store? Or are they just mail-order. If they have a store, you should really go over there and check stuff out. Seems like they have anything a studio guy could ever want.
I agree. The ART tube MP is the way to go for a cost-effective mic pre-amp. Just one thing: as soon as you get it, change the tube. Most times, the original tubes suck and give you inconsistent results. After you do that, you're in business.
My choice would be a Behringer MX 802 mixer. You get four clean mic pres, 8 channels, aux sends and returns, eq, and more for $140. Some around here trash the Behringer mixers, some trash the Art Tube MP, but I've used the 802 for over a year and it's performed very well. It'll suit me just fine until I can afford $500 -$700 for a real pre.
Ive used an 602a for a pre and It was very clean but now I only use it for Its effects loop and the two extra pres would come in handy for drum micing If I didnt have electronic drums.
