Looking for very cheap SD condenser, off ebay, for high hat. Really down and dirty, just put all my money into monitors, have a session coming up. Thanks for help, Frank Military

My favorite HH mic is the Shure SM81... many times you can get them pretty cheap secondhand... ebay, etc. But, if you're on a really really tight budget... a Shure SM57 will work, and you should be able to find a good secondhand one for about $40 or so.

Condenser, really?

If you want "down and DIRTY" find an EV635A, (dynamic & omni, NOT condenser - but nasty as hell).

I guess the Oktava 012's are okay if you're looking for a cheap but usable condenser... although they can be touch and go regarding reliability.

P.S. - the SM81's are far from "cheap", even used... tho they do sound great on a HH and certain cymbals. SM57's sound "dumpy" to me... plus they're dynamic.

I own four Oktava mics, including 3 MC012's. I have not had any problems with any of them. True, they have some subtle differences in sound (two are close enough for stereo), but they all sound great.

I know you want cheap, but one homereccer is selling a well-used but advertised as functional SM81 for $125 on the Free Ads section. You won't see a price like that very often.

I don't know the seller so be sure to do your own homework if interested.

hey, i bought 3 takstar PCM-6100 's from ebay new and they have been brill. i use 2 for over heads and one on the hi hat and the sound seems to be very accurate. They were also used this week at my school for our recordings and sounded great for most things. I highly recommend them if you are on a huge budget. i got each one for about £14. You might have to look on Ebay UK as that is where i got them from.

You can score AKG dynamics for pretty cheap ... but pretty much any nasty thing on ebay will do you a job. Not sure you'll get a 'sleeper' for that kinda money though.

I think the last Jack Johnson album used an SM57 on hi hat. It sounded like a 57 but worth a try as I'm assuming you have one.

The ADK SC1 would be fine, the SP B1 would be fine as well. The Oktava MC012 would be fine.

I personally use a KSM32 but it's a $500 mic.

Some more info

I have a 57 but it's used on the snare. I'm thinking, I have a SM94 that I'll use on the HH, that leaves me with out one of my overheads. My overheads were not matched (the other was an vocal AT mic.) So move the 94 to HH an get if not a matched pair, two of the same mic for overheads... I loved to get a second 94 but they are to much dough. ceep overheads then, thanks for the help, Frank Military

94 is a decent mic, that should work fine. I used to use spaced 94s as drum OHs.
