Cheap chinese microphones vindicated

Yawn. Are we still here?

If someone wants to go out and buy a cheap mic to make ok recordings, that's fine by me. I've spent quite a while getting what I believe to be the best value mics I can for my setup, but apart from my T3 none of them were expensive - none would cost more than $200 USD. And I can make ok recordings.

But to come and claim that some Behringer mic is a vintage 50s design, that Behringer is a pioneer for bringing it out, that you can use the mic to 'dither' some 'noise' and 'mud' back in .... well, that's just bullshit, in and out, through and through.

If any of you are that bothered by what Cressrock says, you're already beyond hope. Who cares? He's just one guy making money out of good recordings ... why should his opinion be regarded any more highly than any of the other pros here? You are a pro, right, Lex? I mean - it would be a shame if you were just the older version of any of the hundred of 15 year-old newbies who come here every year to claim they found the holy grail of recording, and it only cost $50 from Radio Shack.
do you guys think up these elaborate mis-statements of other people's posts on your own or do you....wait a minute....you're stoned...aren't you.....don't lie....you can't hide it....just can't handle that short memory transfer thingy. eah...eah.

Just so you know, whats good for the munchies is a tall glass of water, otherwise you could get fat sitting there twisting up thoughts and stuff...sinners, you nawty nawty boys, yer nawty

Let me guess, you're a 39 year old drummer right?

Drummers are the best producers, but drummers are weird also.

Who's stoned here? :D

Okay, I'm really trying to be serious.

Why all the venom, and why the piss and vinegar for chinese mics?
I'm on the same boat you are, actually my boat is probably even smaller and cheaper, but GEEZEUS KRISTE man, you come across as a very angry individual.

So, if you please, Why?

I'm just playing around.

Cool. Us too. So why the grief?
It was my nievety that led to ME becoming pointed a bit at times. I do sincerely apologise if I offended anyone. I find you all very talented with much to offer. My nievety was not having experience in forums with the topic jump off and rhetoric. I should have been more sensitive to seeing things better than the first take. After all, I expected that of my posts, didn't I? There is no grief. I just get snappy at times.

Again, my apologies if I have offended anyone...

You haven't offended anyone, it's all good. And I'm not talented enough to have much to offer. In fact, I'm at all an-time pissed-offness with my recording ability. But hey - it's not my cheap mics' faults!!!! :D:D

point taken. most the time, as with stirring up a post in the wrong way, I find mood is a large part of the entire process of recording. Kinda puts the relativity of being on an expensive schedule for a label into challenge. Sometimes you need to "get there" whether your heart or mood are in it or not.

Ya know what I really like about you guys is that you are willing to admit mistakes and have no problem to apologise.

I'm from the Netherlands and people are much more stubbern here, apologising is a very big step to make here. I've learned a lot about attitude here and on other (American) forums.

So Lexdrummer, there's no need to apologise bud, the only thing I've noticed is that you didn't read Chessrock's posts very well, the guy made some very good remarks.

Let's make some music.

Do you think I can hijack this thread for some recording advice? Whilst all the clever people are here? I need some help with a vocal where the band are supposed to sound garagey but I can't get the singer right. Can I link to an mp3? Tell me if that's ok.

I apprecirate the input, and you are right. As I said earlier i was pointed and snappy that day. I really should have done better in the eyeball department

go for it, the principle of being at this site is to get together. By all means, be productive wherever you want to.

Ok, this was a kiddy band that recorded at my house last week. They have no bassist and the drums were mixed to stereo. Basically they're happy with the guitar and drum tracks ("don't change it, it's how we sound"), but the vocal isn't sitting at all well. It sounds 'ok' on my monitors but on another stereos it sounds crap ... dead. The vocals were done SP T3 --> Soundcraft M12 --> Delta 44 --> Vegas 5.

BTW - That's me doing backing vocals cos they didn't have a 2nd vocalist :o

Nik, there's a little too much around 160-170hz in the overall sound.

The vocal can be a tad louder and maybe you should mult it to another (second) channel and add some heavy compression there. You keep the transients that way in the uncompressed (or little compressed) channel.

That will make your vocal track 'sit' better in the mix.

You're allowed to disagree. :D

Thanks Han! This was my very first try at recording an actual band that wasn't just my music. We did seven songs in three hours, all down in one or two takes. It's just the vocals that aren't working at the moment ...

I have found this little gem useful at times for just what you are looking for, a tad more fat and front. It needs to be used delicately and it won't over saturate.

Just the quickest thing that comes to mind.

Overall is a mix that seems to be working. I like it. Midnight oil meets hard rock. nice work.
