I have to disagree personally with Fishmed's assessment of Carvin equipment.

I have used their guitar and bass amps, power amplifiers for PA, and mixing board (the supposed "studio" ones, as well as their live consoles both powered and non powered".

I have yet to find a piece of gear of theirs that ranks any better than most Peavey stuff. About the same quality to me.

They are making a nice tidy profit selling direct. Their equipment does not cost all that much to build, and their prices are not that much cheaper than comparable gear. So the direct sales thing suggesting that you are getting a "high quality" product for much cheaper because you don't pay the middle men is a farse.

But hey, if you dig Peavey stuff, you will probably like Carvin too. That is my opinion based upon many experiences with their stuff.

Oh, you bass players out there, be carefull of the Carvin Bass amps and preamps. I have found without exception that you will experience grounding problems no matter what instrument of speakers you are using with it. Also, the line outputs on it are extemely noisy, so watch out with trying to DI the stuff.

I'd have to agree with Ed 100% on this one. I've found their guitar and bass gear to be lousy sounding and as Ed said, extremely noisy. I don't think their prices are very good either. Especially given the quality of their products. Then again, I have a buddy of mine who loves his acoustic/electric.
 
they make LARGE diaphragm mics, just flip the bass speakers around rewire it a little and you have a giant mic. you can hook it up to your toaster as well to get a hotter signal.
 
Never used Carvin stuff before...Sonusman, does it suck?
 
Most of what Carvin sells is good stuff. I love their guitars and PA equipment. They are underrated because you have to buy direct from them, so not many people have tried their stuff. I never tried their microphones, and I wonder if someone else is making their mics and they are just pawning them off as their brand.
 
A lot of the older American guys around here are into Carvin guitar amps. I tried one once a long time ago and didn't like it very much though. Never tried their mics.

I like their guitars NOT their guitar amps. To be honest the only PA gear I've used are their power amps and speakers. I thought they did a pretty good job, but of course I would take JBL over them any day of the week. I would not use Carvin's PA gear in the studio.
 
I have a buddy that uses a Carvin Bass, 5 string. He is in love with it. I played it and think it is lousy. The body is one of the lighest bodies I have ever felt for a bass, and the tone is simply aweful. I suppose that you could play around with new pickup's, but, I still think that the instrument is not capable of producing good bass tones.

It also plays too easy. Lot's of fret buzz, and we are not talking about a simple "raise the action" solution. It is just the way they design them.

I have used their PA speakers too and suspect that they are actually made by Eminence, which is not know for producing very great stuff. It works, but never seems to produce sound that is cool. Don't try to throw any "gotta set the PA right" bull at me here. I have mixed grammy winning artist's on some very nice, and not so nice systems and keep getting hired because I can milk the most out of anything I am given.

The C in Carvin is for crap. The A is for atrotious. The R for revolting. The V for Very bad (okay, two words, but you try to find a v word that works... :)), the I for insulting, and the N for NO GOOD (okay, I am on a roll and can't be bothered with find better words...give me a break!).

Buyer beware when buying Carvin! I have seen too many people invest thousands into their gear just to have to turn around and try to sell it at .30 cents on the dollar and get better gear.

Remember, buy cheap, buy twice.

Yeah someone brought this up on r.a.p. but haven't had a chance to pass it along. IMHO, ooo, an brand-new 87 for $300?

Man I wish this mic would prove us wrong. Though I'm 99% sure it won't.
 
Carvins guitars are simply among the best sounding and constructed guitars made today,
I had an old carvin guitar I bought about 5 years ago, Paid $250 used, It was one of the best sounding guitars Iv ever played and the build quality was outstanding. One solid perfect playing guitar, Having said that It was pretty ugly and I still don't find carvin guitars attractive.

Iv also heard but cant verify that SHURE make radio shack as well as carvin mics. I plan on buying the new carvin cm87s.

As to the Eminence reference above, they do indeed make carvin speakers and if you think they are crap think again, Eminence makes all of fenders speakers as well and speakers for most guitar amp makers in the US. If you don't believe me read their current add running in most guitar publications or read the following post from Ted Weber of Weber speakers..........................................

"Eminence makes Mojo, Carvin, Fenders, New Sensor, Magic Parts, etc. etc., etc.

Credence (also in Kentucky) makes Kendricks.

SICA in Italy makes Jensen reissues and Weber AlNiCo signature Series.

And that's the truth."

Also. Every guitar magazine consistently rates carvin guitars among the best sounding best built guitars available.
 
I never made any mention to guitar speakers. As I recall, I was talking about PA speakers. I am sure that Gauss, EV, JBL, Community, etc....don't have Eminence make their PA speakers, and for good reason; they suck.

I only know what I hear. What I hear from Carvin guitars are not good things. They are in my opinion firmly planted in the old Mighty Might quality range.

Of course, I wasn't talking about Carvin Electric guitars, I was talking about their Bass's. But since you went there.

I am a guitar snob. I have owned some very impressive instruments and commonly work with a producer and a singer songwriter in the studio who between them have some of the finest sounding guitars I have ever heard being played in front of my eyes.

I also do some pretty serious live mixing, and the last time I seen a Carvin guitar on a big time stage was when a local DJ put together a band to open for some national acts. He played a Carvin guitar and head and cabinet. I have seldomly heard worse tone. He even let me have my way with it and I walked away disgusted.

So you like Carvin guitars. Cool. Buy as many as you like. You can even believe those "endorsements" they have. But I can guarantee you one thing. Not one of those Carvins make it to tape.

Trying to say that Carvin produces instruments of the quality of the expensive Fenders, Gibson, ESP, Godin, Breedlove, hell, even the old 70's Ibanez stuff is like saying a VW Bug is as fast as a Corvette..... :D

Play Carvin if you like. It means nothing to me. I may change my mind when I actually hear one that sounds good. And trust me, I have heard plenty.

About Shure making mics for Radio Shack. Do you really think that they are going to make the same mic for Radio Shack as they put their name on? I got a bridge to sell you if you do. Shure making mics for Radio Shack doesn't mean that it is the same mic. On the other hand, Fender more then likely has higher quality components and/or trademarked designs that Eminence cannot use on their own line of "Eminence made speakers". The fact that Eminence assembles the speakers for Fender only means that Fender has found a better profit margin by not owning a speaker building plant. This is not an unprecendented scenario, a company that makes normally cheap things making a "quality" line for another company.

Anyway. Carvin still sucks.... :D

Although I like their guitars, I will have to agree with Ed, Carvins guitar amps suck and I don't like Fender's amps either. Give me a Marshall or Messa Boogie.
 
Ive never heard a boogie or new marshall I like infact I hate that boogie preamp distortion sound. Just my opinion. The only new marshall I care for is the 1959 SLP reissue All others sound like a bunch of buzzzz to me. I'v never tried a carvin amp so I cant comment.

I will say that their mixers sound decent and are built like a tank.
