So I feel like a complete dick asking this and I hope it doesn't offend anyone but I was wondering how one actually ends up having a career in the music industry...?

I am due to graduate from university this year from a digital film course but music is my passion and what I want to do in life... (I'm sure everyone wants that) but is it possible to get a career in music other than being a performer if you haven't got a degree in music? I play and record ALL the time so I know a fair bit about working in a studio but what careers should I be looking into to start off? if I even have a chance.

Thanks and i'm sorry if this is an ignorant question... Thank You!

Internships are a good way to get your foot in the door in many industries....

Personally as a career move I would go down the film sound route (as you have done the film course), and do some music recording on the side starting with some friends bands.

Alan.

I agree. I would go even one step further, go down the film side, learn how to improve your recording so you can put the two together. Everything is so visual, if you know film, learn recording and maybe composing, (good money in film scores), then you could make a good living doing what you love.

+1
And maybe take some extra audio engineering classes at your local community college for reinforcement if available - in your spare time.

You've been here for 10 years and have only posted once?!?!?!?

I might be biased because it's my "dream", but yeah I'm in with another vote for the film route!
Either that or video game soundtrack stuff.
I know there's a fine line between that and being a "performer", but
on the production side I just think that those routes that lean towards licensing probably provide the best career in this day and age since so many of the traditional producer roles are now filled by the performers themselves thanks to DAWs and the HR revolution.

There are tons of places to look for licensing and/or work too on the internet.
You'd be surprised at the amount of people that are looking to pay 3 or 4 figure amounts to people for scoring their indie movie or game, or give them a track for some project or something like that.
Sure, it's not Hans Zimmer or Slash level stuff, but it could easily become a main source of income due to one thing leading to another. Or just do to you doing a lot of licensing or scoring. $300 here, or $600 there might not seem like a lot, but if you do a lot of projects it'll add up!
