So I was looking for a tune to cover (recording practice) and I came across an old Greg Kihn album. I said, hot damn. So I did a cover of "Cant Stop Hurting Myself". Maybe you old guys will remember this one. The album "Rock-Kihn-Roll", had "The Breakup Song" on it also (his most popular song). But this was my favorite off the album. I used alot of reverb and vocal doubling on this one to get that 1979 feel. As usual Im playing everything and tryin to sing. Enjoy.

Hey Bushmaster!
Nice song....don't know the original, but this is nice.
I feel like I hear some timing issues with the snare drum here and there, nothing you can't fix. Your voice sounds really good...it's just too far away in the mix though, as if you were standing pretty far from the mic. Nice job overall.

Cheers
Joe :D

Thanks Joe. Yep the drum timing is my downfall. I need to take the time and adjust the timing. I think a couple more guitar tracks at the chorus (heavier), might help too.

I have an LP of his pre Breakup Song- the single was Beside Myself - cool band & cover.
Nice bass runs.
Power Pop can be soooo good.
Maybe you should do an Emo/Goth interpretation given the theme.

Thanks Ray. Some may think Im into pain, by the title :)

Sounds good, dig the vocals. Whatever happened to Greg Kihn??

As mentioned, the timing issues in the drums are noticable but fixable. Other than that, its well done and was a good listen. Blast from the past.

I like it - I think the vocals could use a little less reverb and still sound pretty '70s - I think I remember the song. Nice job!

Typing as I listen--great bass line. I don't think the guitars need more tracks; they sound pretty good to me! Does the vocal have reverb & delay? I get the comment about a bit less reverb, but a tight delay could come up if the the verb comes down. Gives it the depth & "wetness" but might make it a bit clearer at the same time.

I like the overall mix. Everything has a sweet spot of its own--and nice job with the dynamics.

I don't remember this song much at all either, but I sure like the way you've done it. Great job! :D

I think I may need to run my latency test again on my drum channels. Is it individual snare and kick hits or all of them. I did have a few I was way off (I not a drummer). I moved those. Let me know if its the entire drums or just random hits. Random hits would be me :) Entire thing would be latency.

Thanks WhiteStrat. Vocals are 3 tracks of the same vocal. One detuned up, one normal, and one down. Each has a small delay and is panned left center and right, no reverb. So maybe shorten the delay and reduce left and right pan ? I alos need to check the drum timing brought up too. Thanks again.

How long is the delay? And how loud are those panned & delayed tracks compared to the center track. I do the same thing w/vocals and usually the delay real tight--9-10 ms. But that's probably too subtle for what you're doing.

Not sure. I'll take a look. I just got done recording a band and Im grabbing a bite to eat. I do know the bass drum was off on the latency. I corrected it and its better. I'll upload the fixed version later. The Bass channel was 15ms off for some odd reason. Dont know if my DAW lost the previous test results or what. Its still not perfect, but I can blame the rest on my sloppy drumming. :)

Fixed the drums (best I could) :) Reduced the delay and spread on the main vocal also. Drums sound better now (still not in perfect time though). Im getting too old. :) Also I reduced the main mix compression. I had a tad too much. I had a gospel band come out and lay down some tracks, so I'll be busy mixing them next week. Nice change of pace from my normal week. All original material and they sound pretty good. Bluegrass gospel at that.

Sounds like a blast! Have fun! (Will they let you post some sneak previews?)

I might ask to post a tune. We did 9 tracks and they are all originals and have been copy-righted. I dont have a cd duplicator so they are taking the final cd to a local business with a machine. I might have to invest in one. They are making 1,000 copies this round to see how it sells.

Don't sound too bad. I like the distant/phasey vocal sound. Guitars and bass sound good. Key's too.

Drums sound pretty good. I'm not liking the kick very much. It's plenty there, but has no boom to it. Too midrangey and clicky. Needs more thud.

Thanks GregL. Im taking a break from it, but I will definately give it more thud. I spent about 4 hours mixing the first of the 9 gospel tracks I recorded for a local band. They came out to listen to it and gave me the go ahead on the mixing style. They absolutely loved it. My ears are fried though. Its fun mixing other peoples stuff. I cant play worth a shit and when I get good musicians out, its like christmas.

Cool stuff Bushmaster!

I don't know this song, but I remember Greg Kin.

I agree with Greg on the kick that it could use a little feel. Maybe some around 60hz.

Nice one:)

Thanks Freud. Definately will beef up the kick once I finish the Gospel cd.
