This is a list of what I want...

- to be able to record to ATLEAST 2 ADATs
- to mixdown to DAT or minidisc
- excellent preamps/phantom power for mics
- either analog or digital is fine
- eq/pan/etc on each channel
- outboard effects returns

This is what I will have...

- ATLEAST 2 ADATs for recording
- a DAT or a minidisc
- 8 tracks of audio coming from computer for my beats (will it be best for me to get something like the Echo GINA, run those 8 outs to my board and record on adat, or mix on computer and use one of those adat digital cards?)

- 2 turntables/mixer setup
- an array of samplers, drum machines, synths...
- one mic
- compressor/limiter/gate(s)
- any effects racks
- monitors

My main question is what board do you all have in mind? Other than that, just analyze my wants and needs and tell me what I need to be taking into consideration and what components I will need (specific model suggestions). I produce hip hop music.

Digital mixingboard?

Look into a Mackie 1642vlzPro. Excellent mixer,excellent
Pre's and smooth faders.

I'm thinking of setting up a homestudio with simmilar
specs to thememuzik, you recomended a Mackie mixboard but
shouldn't a digital mixerboard be better since he is recording on ADAT?
I mean then you can mix as much as you want without soundloss...but then again
I'm a newbie in studio equipment.

Well, that depends on whether you prefer an analog mixer!
I paersonally prefer an analog mixer-having recorded a ton over the years via Analog-I just like the feel of a REAL mixer- versus using a mouse and/or keypads/buttons for everything. I like having the knobs to turn.

I use a 1604vlz with a pair of Tascam DA-38's patched in through the channel send/receive patchpoints.

What this does is one track per channel.

Yeah, what Tim Brown said.I record also to ADATS but I use
an Alesis 32 which has direct-outs that I can hook up direct to my LX20's.This eliminates the need to repatch. I use a Mackie 1202 vlz when I'm recording to computer as thier pre-amps are far superior.

Ahh ok, hmm how much is the "soundloss" in using a analog mixer? must be hardly noticable since everyone seem to use that setup.

Anyway, say you have one ADAT, that's 8tracks right? Why
should i then wan't a mixerboard with say 32lines? Just to be able
to add another ADAT without having to get a new mixer or
is there any other gain from it?

In short, how does the process work from recording to "master dat?"

hook your stuff into the mixer and record onto the ADAT
and then you can play from the ADAT back to the mixer again and
tune the EQ and stuff and then output into a "master dat?"

I've read a shit load of texts about recording but i can't seem to
find a text covering this bit to my satisfaction...

Hey bip, if you look at http://www.alesis.com you will see how
the setup works, I use 2 Lx20's(adats) and run my direct outs into my adats(I sometimes use 1 but there was a case where I need 14 traks therefore I used 2adats).I don't
experience any "soundloss" as my board was made specifically to run into the adats. I use 4 compressors on
4 drum tracks and 2 others for bass and vocals, sometimes switching them around. Idon't master down to "dat" as those are a waste of money. Upon completion mixdown,I burn my "master" down to cd.Basically what you wrote in your last post is correct as far as recording to adat, sending the signal back thru the mixer for processing and burn,or tape your master to c/d ot cassette recorder.
