Can you identify this mic?

?

I have nothing to do with the auction, if that's what you're suggesting.
If on the other hand you imply that i possess little knowledge of mics, then you're absolutely right.

Ich wohnte in Gelsenkirchen, als ich kleiner Junge war. Mein Deutsch ist nicht sehr gut, aber ich versuche.

Attic find, old condenser microphone marks M1, No.: 318, with original stand, function not examined, inside apparently completely, an internal part mark RFT, with tube ECC 83, mass: Height with stand approx. 25 cm, equipment with old use-pure. Vorkasse and 8 euro dispatch and packing. Private sales, no warranty or cancelling.

But I guess you already knew that...I've done a little looking but I've not been able to ID it.

I give up.

whoa we got a translator on our hands

Herzlich vielen Dank, Mr. Punkin.

I understand german. I was just being curious about the exact name of the mic in order to look up a review or something. Perhaps a bit naive to scan through ebay to find a good mic at a modest price when you don't have a clue. Anyway, thanks for your effort. I appreciate it.

and it's ugly

Wheever I see things from the DDR I get the feeling that communism is tantamount to an artistic lobotomy

After searching extensively on the web i found no mention of any mic called RFT M1, hence my question. The auction just ended at ~ $320,
which i assume does not solely rely on its astounding beauty (i liked the look though) or the abundance of sound clips and info.

I can say what it is not. It is not a Nuemann or Telefunken. The design style looks like mid European or possibly Russian but I would lean more towards a European mic, possibly Chek. It looks like a Telefunken capsule inside the screen so I imagine it is a copy of similar design from the 40-50s era.

edit - RFT Funkenwork was an East German company. I just found a historical site which talks about them . http://www.rftfunkwerk.com/index.html

Look down the side at pics of these mics. Looks like I see a similar capsule. http://www.pdrefahl.de/mic/1_psu_d.htm

I think it looks very intersting, but I am a sucker for funky gear.

$320 seems reasonable if it works. It doesn't show a power supply, which is worrysome.

There was another very neat looking mic on the page:
Reitssmann

Btw, the capsule in the Thiele was an M7.

cominginsecond: i saw Microphones was previously on your label.
Elvrum is one of my favourite persons in art.
Did you make any recordings with him? I'd love to hear some early stuff of his.

Yes,

It's a Thiele M1 and it looks a bit fucked.

I have an M4 (multi-pattern) which I am modding just now.

They are East-German and apparently Herr Thiele was good friends with Herr Neumann.

The power supply is built in and should be removed to reduce noise.

The mic circuit should also be changed. The valve is too close to the capsule and 12AT7s don't generally make great microphone circuits.
