Can you ID this mic ?

WRT the Reslo ribbon lip mic as well as being very close to the source it also exploits the proximity effect. Talking that close to a velocity sensitive mic give a massive LF boost. There is a box that contains some passive filters which 'flatten' the boost and in so doing removes much of the ambient noise which, in an F1 pit is mostly low frequencies. The lip guard is not just "cosmetic" it keeps the mic at a precise distance and thus ensures the correct frequency response which is critically dependent on that distance.

I am sure there is a BBC monograph about it? I had a text book covering that mic and the 4038 and "Ball&Biscuit" but stupidly sold it years ago!

I have two of them. The frequency response is built into the mic. When I first got one, it was second hand and after plugging it in and hearing a weird thin sound I thought it faulty and stuck it on a shelf. Years later I bought another and discovered that is the sound you get UNTIL, you put it on your lips and speak as you do normally. Forgetting worries of proximity, breath noise and sibilance. Just speak. Then what you get is amazingly good, and the background noise way, way down.

Right Rob! The mic I saw in the book came in a brass bound wooden box with the EQ in the box. I can only assume it was a prototype or, advances in smaller components made it possible to contain everything in the mic body.

GO! GO! GO!

And the reverse - whispering Ted Low - who commentated on snooker by whispering because he was surrounded by the audience and ordinary speaking would have been way too loud
