Can someone identify this?

I know it's a DBX 158 and I know what it does but is it any good? Any guestimates on age?

It's dbx type 1 noise reduction which is about the best there is. Age? Heck, those things have been around since the stone age. I'd guess the 70's based on look. :)

I'm not familar with that particular box, but I'll venture a guess that it's an 8-channel version of the 150 (or 150X), which is a two-channel dbx NR unit that people (some people) still use.
 
And most likely meant to match up with an 8 track reel to reel.

A dbx 150 (or 150X) seems to go for around $50. If this is really the same thing in an 8-channel version (i.e. four 150s), I suppose you might argue it's worth $200 or more -- for someone who has an 8-track and wants NR, it's a bit better than four 150s because it's smaller, has one power cord, etc. I'd expect $100-$150 is more in the ballpark, though. But I could be wrong (for one thing, it might not be the same thing as four 150s).
 
All dbx type 1 NR units are compatible, so it is indeed supposed to be the same thing as four 150 units.

My A-8 has inbuilt NR that is good enough, so I don't need it, but ask in the Analog only forum, some other 8-track owner could be interested. :)
 
that unit was seen more in prof. studios where they used DBX, and had it on 16/24 track machines. That unit was not intended for home use. You see alot of other stuff in that style frame...from that era. However, DBX did not really do well as Dolby seemed to fair better as noise reduction when noise reduction was the big thing in the studios....kinda prior to decent digital. The stereo 150 units where more popular for home use...or even the little 4 channel units. worth?....not too much, unless someone is looking for one.
 
You got that for free? Damn. Free is a good deal!.

I wouldn't mind having it as a back-up unit.
