Alright I've had this explained to me a hundred times and I still don't get it. What I want to do is have a drummer (with 4 drum mics), a guitarist, a bassist and about 8 tracks of midi all recorded on to separate audio tracks simultaneously. What I thought was hook it all up to a mixer and run the direct outs of each channel to say, 3 MOTU 1224s and just select a different input for each channel in Cubase. Is this right? Is there a better way of doing it? Please explain as if you were talking to a complete idiot hahaha cause that's what I feel like.

Thanks,
Matt

Why do you need to record the midi to audio at the same time you are recording the audio? Seems to me you could plaback the midi while recording the audio and then record the midi to audio later on (or even do it before you record the audio). This way you would only need one 8-channel soundcard (e.g. Delta 1010).

As you said, run the direct outs from your mixer to each of the soundcards inputs and select a seperate source for each track in your recording software. The only part I don't understand is why you need to record the midi simultaneously.

I was just using the MIDI as an example. I can record that to audio later.
