That's one of Bob Katz's favorite EQs. I think I'll save that money and muddle through with my old Symetrix unit.

You liking the old Symetrix stuff Diggy? I have 2 micpres with out power supplies if interested for cheap.

Got an SE-400 made in 1986. The pots are dirty, but it ain't a bad EQ.

I don't really have much use for a mic pre. Nothing is going to make my voice sound pretty. :laughings:

I've never used these preamps they came in a group purchase with a bunch of other items. Could be good maybe not.

wow. alot of responses. i know the elementary differances between what hardware and software are.... i was talking about sound quality. the reason i ask is i have already accuired a ton of software. but am unsure if its nessesary to invest in hardware as well.... or is top notch software like wave mercury good enough

Wow, you're looking to spend $4700 for the mercury bundle and you have to ask about the difference between hardware and software??

I'd probably invest some first on books on recording. You can have the nicest studio in the world and make it sound crappier than recording to cassette on your 1980's Panisonic boombox if you don't have the knowledge on how to run it properly....

I don't want to put you down, but just saying that maybe your not ready to spend that much yet. I wish that when I first started out, someone would have told me to get books instead. I ended up getting all the wrong stuff.

It's like one of the great rock songs stated (Schoolhouse Rock ;) ) "It's great to learn, 'cause knowledge is power!"

Not saying that this is the case, but let's hope not, for if it is. PIRATED SOFTWARE will not work to it's full potential and is a very bad way to go.
The Net is full of these ripped off versions of software and it really sucks for everyone involved..

Remember no accusations just a reminder to all reading this thread. :)

Plus, I ban people if I suspect them of seeking help for or advocating pirated software. :D

Some of the most expensive software+hardware cost upwards of $30,000. I would wish I could pirate a new vehicle of the same value. :D  :D

My new virtual Jaguar is out there somewhere.

You should get Need for Speed or something. My kid races that $2million Bugatti!!

But are you not the Irish "Pirate"?

Yes, Pirate, as in sailing boats and drinking rum. :D

That's not a put-down. Equipment in that price range requires more knowledge than even some old-timers have to use correctly. Excellent gear isn't a substitute for skills. Definitely find out what gear would be best for your needs before spending that kind of money.

i know a guy with a studio, and since im a student. he let me put this shit on my computer for educational purposes. so i don't really need books but thanks to all who honestly tried to help. hopefully it will save me some money. i dont know why nobody can give me a straight answer as far as to whats happening to the actual sound wave with analog hardware vs software.... i guess i dont see how a computer couldnt perfectly match and wave shape...
