Hey guys I am about to start making some Absorber panels for my project studio but I am having a hard time finding rigid fiberglass (703).
If I cant find it can I use thicker fiberglass? and if so what R-Value? Can I stuff it in or is it better to leave it loose?

Thanks for your help.

What kind of panels? Some membrane panels would be fine with the pink stuff but not for hemholtz or "dead" panels. Mineral Wool has the same absorbing properties and is easier to get, and cheaper.

The R Value as I understand it is a thermal rating and does not apply to acoustic properties. The reason 'rigid' fiberglass is primarily used is because of its relatively high density (weight per area), which makes it a good choice for absorbing sound waves at different frequencies. The rolls of pink insulation have a much lower density and do less to absorb sound waves.

Hope this makes sense.

You can also use the rigid fiberglass that they use to make AC Return air vents from.
I think its quite a bit cheaper than 703 too.

Thanks for the help guys!
Michael, do you know if that fiberglass is sold in places like Home Depot or Menards(menards may just be a MN company)?

The panels I'm building are for my side walls for absorbsion.

Thanks

You are not going to find anything like it at any of the big warehouse stores. I got mine from www.realtraps.com
You can get it at HVAC supply houses

Hmmmm..... Them I may be in luck as my father runs a HVAC bussiness. :)

Off to bloomington I go monday!

But here is my next question.
If I was to use a "thick" piece of insulation, wouldnt it be just as effective?
As rigid is suposed to be effective but with less space taken up right?

The reason I asked about R-value was just to see how it compared to other simular products....

Thanks again!

What kind of panel for sidewall absobsion? What were you looking at when you decided "thats what I want". Or what are you trying to accomplish?

I'm asking because if the insulation is going to be *Inside* a wall, then you only need the pink stuff of any Rvalue.
If your wanting to install it ontop of a reflective surface, then it does need to be either rigid or mineral wool insulation. With the mineral wool being the cheaper.

It depends on what kind of "thick" insulation. If your talking about the "thick" stuff you see at HD then no, that will not do anything good for you.
ALL rigid fiberglass is not effective, just certain open celled types.
R-value has nothing at all to do with sound absorption.
