Can I Even Sing Well?

I cant drag a tune behind me in a bucket, but there is something cold and robotic...

not that I think its WRONG to have a couple drinks to geta good show, but, as a drummer I have seen many young singers who had to have several drinks before they could "work"... *shrugs* I'm not sure thats the cure-all answer its being made out to be... you dont want to "need" to drink 6 beers before singing is possible... that disrupts practices and creates as much problems off stage as it fixes temporarily on stage...

1) is this your natural "voice", or are you trying to imitate someone so much it produces this robotic thing?
2) maybe a different song where you tend to sound already more like the singer would fix that, if #1 is true.

I mean, i dont wanna hear Chris Issacs cover Metallica, and I also dont wanna hear Hetfield try to do Chris Isaacs, eh?

but, you can sing... yes.

blah song?? no I fricking love this song..
You're singing all the right notes in all the right places!!
But its sounds a little like you're reading the lyrics, let it all go and enjoy it , when you're not thinking about the lyrics and trying hard to nail the notes the emotion will come.
The held long notes sound a little robotic, if you struggle with holding long notes just cut em short or vary the pitch, vibrato a little in them towards the end.

Overall sounds great! I like it.

Here's the thing with singing... Someone mentioned that the key to good vocals is passion, pitch and pocket. Yes, but that's not all. I'm gonna use American Idol to help illustrate my point. There are many technically great singers that have made it far on AI. But just because someone can "technically" sing, doesn't mean you want to keep hearing them sing, or that they move you in any way.

Think of someone playing a passionate, well tuned and timed & technically correct, (passion, pitch and pocket) guitar melody on a cheap guitar on it's bridge pickup, with the amps treble and mids cranked, and bass on zero... who's gonna want to listen to that for long. Tone is huge, and not far behind is style. Vocally, you're either born with good tone, or you're not. Simple. Style, you can work on, but it's usually innate. Good singers always find ways to separate themselves from others stylistically. Phrasing has a great deal to do with style. Combine this with technique, and you've got talent. Emotion/passion are always needed, that's a given.

I like your voice, but the song didn't do anything for me. Can you sing? Hell yes....very well. In fact, your voice reminded me of a popular singer from the 70's - Al Stewart. Check out "Time Passages" on YouTube.
