any free of very cheap mastering plugins such as limiters or compressors (not looking for eq) that people have found useful? I've never seriously tried to master my own songs, but I have enough time and interest now to want to venture into this new area, and would like to start out with something free and easy to use. Any links to any great articles would be great too, thanks!

Everyone will probably recommend the Kjaerhus Classic Series, which are all free and good quality:

For a limiter, I like the W1 Limiter which is also free. Apparently the same algorithm that Waves uses in their (L2?) limiter.

If I'm not mistaken, you do mostly acoustic music? I think these plugins work fine even for acoustic stuff.

Also, the ReaComp that comes with Reaper is a really good compressor.

thank you very much. Just remembered I already have Kjaerhus Classic Limiter! and REAcomp since I have REAPER. I'll try out the Waves rip-off too, I've heard some great things about it.
