Can anyone recommend a soundcard that won't break the bank??

Hello:

I may want to upgrade from the integrated soundcard that I have right now, to something more dedicated to Home Recording. Is there anything out there that's less than $100 and worth buying?

To tell you the truth, I have a minimixer and I don't expect to need a preamp. All I'm doing (for now mind you) is recording voice. I don't know if I'll get to record guitar, violin, piano or clarinet on it. However, for that I would have to change my whole setup. New Mixer, different mic, and probably soundproof the room or make a sound dampening booth.
 
FWIW, because I know exactly jack about these things...

I've been leaning towards, and am probably going to get an audiophile 2496 ($99). I've yet to hear anything bad about it, but then again read the first sentence of this post again...
 
The Echo Mia, with its balance 1/4" inputs, is a good value. I've had mine for quite awhile now, and really enjoy it.

I think that you are the third or fourth person recommending the 2496. At $99 it's not a bad price at all. :)

So the echo mia does not have RCA, instead it has two 1/4" inputs? Am I understanding this correctly? Which means that All I need is to get a double 1/4" male cable and I'm done. I'll look up the mia and see what it you are talking about.

No RCA's. Use balanced TRS cables for best results.

Huh? Okay, something else to look up. I'm never going to get to record at this rate. Right now my learning curve is like a vertical line. Okay, I've looked up the 1/4" TRS Cables. What is the difference between them and a 1/4" standard phone jack? Are the the same and the TRS is the technical name, while the other is just a jacked-up named used by people who know nothing like me?
