Final mix

Ok, I've just uploaded my final mix in time for the deadline. I don't think I've worked so hard on one mix in such a short space of time but I have enjoyed it. I don't think I could have mixed it any better either considering the quality of the tracks and the drum track caused alot of problems.

People often consider the drums as one instrument which it is but, when it comes to mixing, we really need the kick seperate from the snare, seperate from the hats, seperate from the crash else there isn't alot you can do. Drums cover the entire spectrum from the lows of the kick all the way to the irritating hiss of the hats and so if I wanna cut the crash, I also lose the snap of the snare and even the click of the kick. You just might want to remember this for future reference Cybergord. A drum loop is useful for jamming but, useless for mixing.
If I record a piano I do it in two takes, not only cause I'm crap at playing but also so I can mix/pan/eq etc both the left and right hands individually.

Anyway as I say, I enjoyed the challenge and it was a good break from the norm. It's a loverly song mate with great lyrics and I think I'll be humming it for some time. So best of luck with it.

Now can you please upload my mix to your website with the others cause I feel left out. ;)

oOps...I almost forgot, the link:-

ReaFir

OK, here's the second mix.

Lo-Fi Mike thanks for the complement. I really enjoyed your mix as well. I just listened to it a few minutes ago. I like how you got those drums so nice and punchy... although if you don't mind I have a question. The snares don't quite sound like the ones in the original track. Have you used something like Drumagog to replace them?

I actually did replace the drums, I was wondering if anyone was going to ask. however it didn't cost me anything to do it. (just lots of patience and time)

I've said it before and i'll say it again ..REAPER IS AWSOME!!!!!!
1) Reaper
2) DrumTrig (freeware)
3) samples from my last nice drum session (kick, snare, toms)

here's how to do it.. http://www.cockos.com/wiki/index.php/Tutorial_9_-_Using_ReaFIR

you can use ReaFir in any vst compatible D.A.W.

i also used a compressor and sidchained the kick to duck underneath the snare, cause the kick was going on every beat and getting in the way of the snare at times. Also a handy plugin in reaper.

I wanna try!!! Deadline it's over but... goddamit, I'll still give you my fucking mix!!! :D

Deadline over

hehe...well that seems to be the deadline over.

Me and my friend Mick D are over the moon with the response and we have really enjoyed the thread and listening to the mixes.

I will reveal the winning mix shortly which will be on our youtube video. Not the best of videos but fun as we only have a mobile phone as a camera.

Feel free to carry on this thread, seems like there are some stragglers who want to have a go. There's a lot to learn here.

My friend Mick D is the judge of this and sends his best thank you to all participants for making him feel like a guitar hero.

Error opening file of Noisewreck's mix in the (Cybergord's) website.
Can you check that please Cybergord.

PS: You guys really got your volume up. I wish now I had compressed.

PPS: That was fun.

I hope we can do like that again sometime.
Afterall, that's why we are here.

Alternative

Well now that the deadline has passed, I just wanted to let you know that I've also uploaded an alternative mix to my website. I didn't wanna put it up before because it's not the one I wanted to submit as it were. It's just something I was playing about with whilst mixing the final version and so thought I'd share it with the thread followers.

Without further ado...

Once again many thanks to all participants.Sincerely.

It didnt help with the poor quality of the recording, I guess you mixers spent more time mixing than I did recording. Its a testament to you all making it sound so good.

Well....we both fell in love with Lo-Fi Mike's mix from the moment we heard it and nobody surpassed it, but a close second was Noisewreck and Mart[1001] and also Fishmed did an excellent job.

What did it for us was the fact that Lo-Fi Mike made it a monstrous sound and really did a great job with blending the bass and drums, now we know how he did it after reading his recent post. Lo-Fi Mike gave this track alive and made the vocals great to listen to with just the right effect with reverb and echo. Play this on your hifi and pump up the volume and you will see what we mean. Awesome.

Also, we can't take anything away from Noisewreck...we love that too, I'm afraid Lo-Fi pipped you with his ingenius use of the reaper tool. Perhaps you guys could share your mix make an even more awesome version?

Mart[1001] gets credit for his creativity with the vocals at the end and a few tricks in between. We loved that too.

Fishmed's mix was also awesome but for the hiss on the vocal esses, but I suspect this may be the favourite of other's here, its just that we love our energetic sound by Lo-Fi Mike.

I'm going to extend the prizes for all the four mentioned above. A choice of Joomla template from www.rockettheme.com of which I am a member, if it's of any use to you? We are just so thankful for the great mixes.

Thanks to all the rest of the guys and the late mixes to come.

Take heed from our mix God Li-Fi Mike and consider tools like Reaper for situations like this when you have a drum break that doesnt sit right.

All the mixes are on show at my page documenting this thread and perhaps the real winner will be the one with the most votes (when I add the polling script) for a long time to come.

appreciate positive comments and helpful comments. Thanks

Well done Lo-Fi Mike and grateful thanks for bringing this to life.

Congratulations Lo-Fi Mike

Congratulations Lo-Fi Mike...have to say you nailed it. I use reaper myself and missed that trick with reaFIR. I was gonna actually re-record the drum track myself from scratch but just didn't have the time as I entered the competition late.
Anyway, well done mate.

Great video Cybergord...lol did you tape your phone to the guitar? hehe.
I love the party feel to the video though lads...looked like fun.

Anyway...this thread was good fun and a good welcome to a new poster like myself. Thanks to everyone that got involved. :)

Mart.

thanks guys

I have to say mixing is fun when the song is good, and this song had me bopping my head the whole time thru.

Awesome song cybergord

yes congradulations an stuff

I still dig the mix by fishmed alot better yes the winning mix has a lot more ear candy, but it sounds bass shy to me and I like the full body mix and the way the elements sit with fishmed's mix I think you nailed this kind of classic clapton sound and I mean nailed it and if anyone knows me im a hard ass when it comes to mixes

ok to the winning mix i really dig all the echos and ear candy ,but where is the kick drum where is the groove of the bass? here is my theory when we first start mixing we start to follow these guidelines to carve out space to make everything fit together and glue the mix together, but sometimes were use to this real clean sound and as we make it cleaner and cleaner we put a hole in the mid range of the mix then when everything comes together it sounds good all the elements are there we can hear everything, but we actully cut away so much it starts to sound unnatural. How many guitars do you no with no body? no first harmonic of the bass no groove to the song? My headphones go down to 12 hz I hear no kick in this mix at all no body in the guitars it's eary how "digital" it sounds theres no crossing of the frequencies and really the goal is to have all the ranges covered and blending together its good but could be better

Congrats LO-FI...You da' man!! :D

I really enjoyed hearing the mixes side-by-side. Thanks Gord for letting us mix this song. It's a good one.

I know I sound like an ass, but lets learn from this and kind of see how this goes bare with me a bit I think the purpose of this is to learn what to hear and what makes a great mix and become better engineers no?

ok so lets examin the winning mix compared to a "pro mix" then the pro mix vs fishmeds mix after all thats the goal the best mix we can get now we wont get it 100% and no one expects that, but this could be good ear training maybe

first i picked a track with a singer who sings higher then our singer so if that singer has more mid range then we know ours should to right? ok lets get started and see how this goes

i examined the tracks leveled them as best as i could for similar volume the first set of three is pro mix winning mix fishmeds mix lowpass at 125hz listen to where the kick should be in the mix roughly and where it is can you hear a kick i couldnt i couldn't hear a kick at all :) also hear how bass shy the mix is compared to a pro mix at roughly the same precived volume its very bass shy overal, Now listen to the tone of the winning vocal its very crisp but unnatural as you start to hear the first guy singing higher hear how full his voice is compared to the other mix and finally how much body is missing from the guitars as you listen you will see why I picked fishmeds mix the balance is even the range is good it doesn't have the bells and whistles but it translates much better and sounds more natural overal

Doulos, what are you talking about? Did you forget some links or something?

I think the purpose of this is to learn what to hear and what makes a great mix and become better engineers no?

I think that what matters in the end is that the customer,a.k.a. Cybergord, is happy with the end product. Not everyone will like the same thing. He had six or seven different mixes to listen to and in the end he picked the one that he liked the best. Could it be better??...maybe to you, but maybe not to the customer.

first i examined the track with the pro track with the levels matched precived loudness cause its a pro compressed mix so i did the best i could for an a and b then i put a simple low shelf on the whole mix and we can exaim parts from there and seperate the track in the eq bands

You can't have two firsts...you have to pick one.:D

no thats not what matters what matters is whats best for the audience that's going to listen to it what matters is what's going to translate better overal espically if this product is to be sold or mastered in any kind of way. I've had work where the bands like we thought this was best, but the mastering engineer said theres no kick to work with no way to fix it it has to be remixed will you fix it for us etc.

You can't have two firsts...you have to pick one.

i was gathering my thoughts there is now a link to my review you can skip my rambling of 2:05 seconds if you like

Why do you British guys (Curt Smith et al) always put socks in your pants when appearing live or in videos.
Or, is it that underwear bought in England comes padded?

lol
