The amp's a Savage - I remember that much (NB: the pic ain't me!). The song he was playing would certainly not have been anything remotely Grand Funkish. For anyone very, slightly, remotely or not at all interested, the pic is of Dave "Rudolph V" Cardwell, during his days in Perth's 77/78 punk band, The Victims. He would have been playing one of my songs, possibly, one of The Victims' originals, or a cover by The Ramones, Heartbreakers (Johnny Thunders, not Tom Petty), Troggs, Modern Lovers or Sex Pistols. No other possibilities. Well, there's my contribution to today's useless information count.

I hate to say it, but you're all wrong! (Technically, that is)

That's an Ibanez 4003 Rickenbacker copy. Look again at the headstock on that bass and you'll see that there's no way that the full "Rickenbacker" name is that short. That, and the bold lettering is practically a perfect match with an Ibanez copy.

Here's one in a different color, but look at how close it is to a real "Rick"...

If not an Ibanez, it's a Penco bass, which was also making great copies of well-known American guitars in the mid to late 70's. Both Ibanez and Penco came from the same factory (Hoshino) in Japan. Tone-wise, the Japanese clones were pretty darned close to a real Rick, too! Sorry to be such a stickler, but I like to give proper credit where credit is due. The Japanese were doing some great work in the 70's and 80's. :)
DAMN! I got faked out. I didn't even know anybody MADE a Rick copy. Thanks for the info!

Not a lot - Rudolph was not into designer shades!

In Mount Hawthorn. You?

Only joking, by the way! Just in case the smiley didn't make it obvious.

He's playing "Closer To Home" (also called "I'm Your Captain") by Grand Funk. It's the beginning of the song and he's right where he should be on that D note... fifth fret of the A string.

Geez... I thought that one was obvious! :D
I dont think so Buck. The fact that he is using a pick as opposed to fingers
is a strong indicator that he does not fully realize the dynamics of the instr-
ument.
Picks and Grand Funk bass lines dont go well together. My guess is that he is
playing a really deep and meaningful tune by Greenday.

By the amount of tension on his strings, it looks as if he has tuned down a semi-tone!

Green Day? They weren't even bulges in their daddys' Yfronts when this pic was taken. 1977/78, sir, 1977/78! The lad concerned is now an old fart, like me...being a punk in yer youth won't save ya from the ravages of time...possibly the opposite, actually. You're right about one thing, though. No need for fingers - we sure as hell didn't want to sound anything like fuckn Grand Funk! They sucked then, and they suck now. Long live garage rock.

Which part's sad but true - you're a Pom or you're a bastard? Silly me - on reflection, the question is entirely redundant. (Just don't mention the Ashes...or the rugby World Cup).
