A Reel Person

It's Too Funky in Here!!!
If I were to sell some NOS 3M 986 and/or some 1995 year NOS AMPEX 456, 1/2" reel tape, what would be considered a fair price? I'm thinking maybe $45/reel? More or less?

I don't ever want to price gouge any honest buyer, but also not to sell myself short, as I need the money very badly in the short term. In-person, face to face sale via Craigslist.

NOTE: The AMPEX 456 is NOS from 1995 and has the "label/logo" in the bottom quarter of the box. Supposedly the NON-sticky Ampex?

ANYONE? THANK YOU!!!

$45 a roll sound fair for 1/2" NOS 456 so long as its not sticky. Also depends on how healthy the market is in your area for that stuff.

Maybe also put something in the ad about accepting reasonable offers to entice some replies. You can always say no if they really low-ball you.

Good luck and hope you find a buyer quickly! :)

Cheers! :)

Yeh,...

It's an oh by the way throw in request from someone who's buying my M520 mixer.

I texted him (para) "$75 for some NOS Ampex 456 1/2" PLUS a used reel of 3M 8206 logging tape that the tape can be discarded and the reel used as takeup". I also added "if that's agreeable, but I think that's fair".

I think if he balks completely at AMPEX then I could change it very quickly to 3M 986. However, with the present state of tape sales, and high prices, I'm not highly motivated to liquidate my existing tape stocks. I'm just trying to do the guy a good turn if he needs the tape to get up and running on his 1/2" Fostex 16 track. Tentatively I'd like to hang onto my half inch tape and eventually do some new productions, as yet TBD. My recording hobby has been off track for years and I've been trying in futility to restart it. That's another post altogether.

I back tracked on the Sticky Shed thread to read that "1995 Ampex 456 should not be sticky".

Let's hope there's follow thru on the whole deal!

THANK YOU!

I would go $50.00 - $60.00 for either of those tapes at 1/2". You're selling better tape than is made today and still basically at yesterday's prices. Those are both excellent tapes, and yes 1995 Ampex 456 is perfectly good and no sticky-shed. I have quite a few NOS reels of that vintage. You may recall that before the tape crisis of 2005, the list price of Quantegy 456 was $49.95 at places like Musician's Friend and zZounds.

Yes,...

I'd proposed $75 for the NOS tape plus some junk tape that could be used for it's metal reel. That would be $50 for the mastering tape and $25 for the (empty) reel. Seems reasonable to me. I didn't get a reply back on that message tho.

If he doesn't like it, he's welcome to go to eBay or any other retail tape vendor and pay their prices. It's no sweat for me either way.

I just want to sell that freakin mixer. The tape was an adjoinder request. I wasn't trying to upsell him, but when you get to my house it's like one stop shopping.

Thank you!!!

Yeah, seems right, especially if the empty reel is the six-screw balanced variety. I'm guessing it is if its got 8206 logging tape on it. Those are easily worth $30.00 or more for the performance advantages of a balanced reel.

Yeah,...

It's a 6 screw precision reel. I feel I'm in the right ball park price wise.

I have no problem helping an analog brother out. I hope there's some follow through on his part. I'm selling things that are excess but not liquidating. I still have my own desires and ambitions buried in there somewhere.

I really appreciate you guys' help. I often refer back to previous posts to give me guidance or clarification of things I'm thinking or issues I have on hand and am working through. I have fairly broad experience and a certain level of expertise in certain things, but I'm glad to have other similar and like minded people to bounce ideas off. Sometimes I'm learning things anew or flying by the seat of my pants!
