Hi Folks,
A quick mix of a more rock oriented song that actually has distorted guitars in it.
Any comments on how to tidy this up would be appreciated.
I just had a listen to the lofi stream & it was BADDD so I've deleted that link - sorry.

It's a song about a conversation with the old Lizard King himself. You may catch some paraphrasing & quotes in the deliberately lower mixed vocals.

Hey RayC - cool tune - I like the chord progressions you've written. The change up in the middle where it slows down is very effective.

The rhythm guitar is overtaking the mix a bit.
Bring up vocals - mostly on first half
Bring up drums
Bring up sax
On slower part, maybe use just left guitar for a more dramatic effect

Nice bass tones as always. How are you recording the guitar this time?

:D :) :D :)

I like it.....nice vibe, and a real fun listen. I'm listening on a crap system right now, so no mix advice.....I just went and DL'd it, to listen to on a better system later. But I like it so far. Seems like it starts a bit louder, and gets softer after a few seconds. Upload glitch maybe?

Anyways...cool tune man...

ditto on ido1957 mixing remarks.
pretty good tune, I'd also say a little less reverb on the vocal.
nice.

RayC - Just remembered I noticed this too when I read Dogman's comment - it did seem to vary in volume at the beginning. I downloaded the MP3 BTW ;)

Sounds good. I like the tone of the guitars. Good bass line. The vocal would sound good I think with much less verb and boosted a bit. Was that a sax solo that just went by there? Boost that too. :D

Thanks Timothty, Ido1957,chugheshc & Dogman,

Sax & vox up,
Even out vol after the intro (yeah, I don't know what happened there),
Dry out the vox,
Boost the drums (the whole kit or something specific? I actually recorded most of the drum parts separately with this one so I can tweak a bit more accurately)
& look at the change passage.
I had actually thought to drop in a quieter guitar picking the chords to replace the louder guitar in the quite section.

The guitars parts are both Epi Sheartons played through a Yamaha FX500 and then given some growl using cake walk amp sims.
The bass - I recorded that a dozen times before I ended up DI'ing it dry.
Thanks all.

Hi RayC, haven't read the rest of the thread so here's a fresh review...

Cool rhythm and feel. I like the bass sound. Too much rhythm guitar. Good voice, but it's hard to hear the vox, probably because of the guitar. Some more power and volume on the drums would sound cool too to give it a little more of a rocky dance feel. Sounds like your vox get louder later in the song, but still would like to hear more drums.
Awesome song though, really dug the groove and structure throughout, just a few mix issues to my ears and system. Cool listen, dug the sax at the end too :D

I've heard that done quite a bit while reading through various posts/threads. DI bass - so simple but sounds so good. Are you using some kind of pre-amp/sans amp? Easy to eq on the downmix too?

Cool tune. The song itself is good. The basslines you write are very intriguing (sp?) and very melodic. Very cool. :)

The mix:
The Sax - I thought maybe a little more reverb on the sax will give it that nice depth that is generally associated with it and it will leave it more lingering in the listeners' ears.

The Bass and the Rhythm guitar are a little overpowering the rest of the song on the current mix.

I'd recommend lower the bass by 3db and raise master volume by 3db (unless it is clippin'). And the rhythm, I'd say lower by 3-4db, add touch reverb and let that be it. Is the rhythm guitar DI'd. Sounds like when I DI'd the dist. out from the amp. :)

Thanks Big,
I'll put those concepts into the 2nd remix. I'd have done it with the 1st but hadn't come back to this original post. C
