My good friend just bought a new adat lx20 and a new pcr card.
He has a state of the art new dell computer running windows me.
We cannot get a signal into adat connect, although connect runs the adat from the computer we see no signal coming in on the monitors. I have not been to his house yet but have been on the phone with him for two hours. Everything is hooked up correctily, I had my set up in front of me to make sure.
We can see light from the pipe in the card and light at the ends of the pipes. We have checked everthing in the device manager and it shows everything ok. I checked the irqs, the card is on no. 11 and is shared with steering and also with a device; INTEL 828 graphics controler? this may not be good? We have downloaded latest versions of software to no avail. My adat is the sencond generation xt so they are not the same and I cant help him on that end. Can you think of anything simple we are missing, I run
windows 98 and he has the windows ME, could that be the problem? I am afraid to shut off the Intel 828 graphics controller in the hardware profile and restart the computer, might come up without a screen and then what. Dont want to go into his bios until i am on site and can do it myself and try to seperate the irqs.
We had the digital out 20 bit set on the adat and in adat connect.

IRQ is OK....if the sharing was a problem, the computer would crash upon booting Connect when the drivers are opened. My PCR shares with my video card and all is well.

My LX-20 decides from time to time to lose its optical output. The light is lit but no one's home.

Try reinitializing the LX-20 BUT do it by UNPLUGGING it, then pressing/holding the RECORD button while you plug it back in. This is perfectly safe, I'm not trying to "off" you! :p The LX-20 has a "soft" power up. Like a VCR, it'll power up by inserting a tape. Downside of this is that the main board is always on at a low level, so a "normal" reinit procedure is not always enough.

Also, make sure the PCR card is NOT selected as the device in Windows Multimedia. Does the Dell have the sound card and video card on the motherboard or are they separate? Alesis tech support has heard of some troubles with Dells, though no solid reason was found....

Thank you. Will check the video soundcard setup. Adat pcr is not selected in control panel multimedia, that I am sure of.

I had my buddie switch slots with the card and now he has a signal, maybe the card wasnt seated properly. Now he has the same problem I have, adat edit 2.0 will not produce any sound. My 1.0 version works but the 2.0 doesnt. I have tried all the audio
options under audio, preferences to no avail. I keep getting an error saying unable to access direct sound device.

1. Is he trying to play out his soundcard or the PCR card?

2. Is his soundcard on his motherboard or separate?

3. Go into AUDIO/AUDIO HARDWARE AND DRIVERS. Click the AUDIO tab, for PC AV there is a down arrow. Click and hold it. What is in the list? If his soundcard is in the list but was not selected, select it and reboot EDIT. Go back and make sure it is still selected in this screen.

4. Also in AUDIO/AUDIO HARDWARE AND DRIVERS, AUDIO tab, de-select WAVE PLAYER. I think that is where the error about DIRECT SOUND is coming from.

5. Go into the mixer and click on an output assign (above the channel panpot). Click and hold on OUT 1 for example. You'll get a pulldown. How many pairs of outputs are there?

I am not sure how his is set but mine is set as follows. PCAV is checked. In the pulldown I have audio pci (which it is set to) game compatable devide and two modem devices. Wave player is not checked and I have two options, primary sound driver (which it is set to) and creative SBPCI sound driver. I have tried changing all of these in different combos. In the mixer window when I click on outputs it shows output 1-2,3-4,5-6,7-8,9-10 and it is set to output 1-2. Like I said, adat edit 1.0 worked fine(I uninstalled it in case it was causing a problem), adat edit 2.0 shows a signal but I cant get any audio. My cards are all seperate. sound, pcr, video, ets.

I am sorry if you are repeating yourself.....did you also download Connect 1.03 drivers?

If yes, have you gone into WINDOWS/SYSTEM and looked at adatpcr.drv Properties and make sure "Version" is 1.03? I have seen some updating problems here and there.....

My problem is solved I am happy to say. I had to set my outputs to 9 and 10 and now I have sound. Now the mysterious part; I call my buddy all happy to be able to get him going and to my amazement his outputs only go up to 7 and 8. I had him deinstall then reinstall, checked the audio preferences, checked all pertinent data, system, multimedia, etc and no matter what the settings his only goes up to 7 and 8???????????????????????????
I am not kidding, I know it sounds a bit like Spinal Tap but thats my story and I'm stickin to it.
 
Um.....did you read the README doc I wrote for the driver updates? I think it mentions that 9 & 10 are for the soundcard. :p

No matter, I'm glad you're OK!

By the way, if you ever use LOGIC, 1 & 2 will be your soundcard's outputs instead of 9 & 10...don't ask, I have no idea. :confused:

As for your friend, if his soundcard is selected in AUDIO DRIVERS & HARDWARE and he still only has 8 outs, ask him 1) is his soundcard on the motherboard? 2) If no, what kind is it? This could be a Dell issue...we'll see....

I think it was Acid, but it had pops and clicks in it. Im sorry I only found the read me the night I reset the outputs. You wrote that, cool.:cool:
Thats another issue, I myself, and I assume others also, would pay 25.00 30.00 for the hard copy issue of a software program
in paperback. The pdif files are one of the biggest pains in the ass and one of the largest contributors to how long it takes to master these programs. If a company like alesis, or emagic cant make money on a 30.00 dollar paperback they have no buisness being in buisness. Their strategy of not offering these in not sound buisness practice.
 
Ahhh...that's different! :) He has a clocking issue with ACID.

ACID does not support ADAT sync, so when you boot it, you have two "wanna be" clock masters: the ADAT and the computer.

When using ACID you have to go into DEVICE MANAGER/adatpcr/ Settings and select EXT SYNC. This will make the card "clock slave" off the Optical In.

This should take care of the clicks and pops.

Regarding the manual, I completely agree....but that's the way Emagic did it....a drag to be sure. It's a huge .pdf.

You were correct in your suspicions pertaining to his soundcard configuration. It is integral to the motherboard. I have a coulple of extra soundcards and may go down and install one and shut off the chip on the board.

You said he was getting audio but with clicks and pops. That being the case, I would make sure the PCR card is clocked properly and see if that fixes things before I change him to an external soundcard.

and we do not know if it is yet.

He doesnt want to use acid, I just had him open the track there to prove to him he actually did have it downloaded to disc. It would play in acid with pops and clicks but we could get no sound from adat edit allthough we could see the signal. I had lots of problems when I had the presarrio upgraded with the onboard chip, had to get another sound card and disable the chip.
