I'll be doing mostly guitar/vocals, maybe a little MIDI (but not much.) Is one better than the other? What are some major differences?

Depends on what Cakewalk program you're looking at. But CoolEdit won't let you do MIDI at all...

I would certainly go for HomeStudio. It's got support for virtual instruments and MIDI.

Anyway, I agree with moskus. If you want to do MIDI (even only a bit) then go with Cakewalk HS. CoolEdit (any version) doesn't do MIDI at all...

Good point about the MIDI. However I've heard CE has some bells and whistles that Cakewalk doesn't have like noise/hiss removal.

Yes it's true. many people loves CEP because it's an audio multitrack AND powerfull audio editor at once. I always use CEP side by side with Cakewalk Sonar They're perfect match. But if you're on tight budget, then Cakewalk has higher priority...

How about say; Sonar studio & say Sound Forge 7.0 for editing? I found a site where they can be had for about $360 for both, is this a good buy? CEP is now Audition, is there any Midi with the Adobe version? Appreciate the help. Happy Holidays- Ralph

Thanks for the help...James Sonar 3 Studio in Musicians Friend is advertised at $300, I found a link here on bbs for http://www.academicsuperstore.com sells Sonar 3 Studio for $200, that's the best I've found, any idea where to look for the $100 buy? Sound Forge is also on this link for $160 another good buy. Of course when you go into the Producer program the $$ go up. Would the $300 Audition be a better editor than Sound Forge at twice the money? Also have seen Wavelab 4.0 as being a favorite here. I really appreciate all your help. Ralph

Make sure you're eligible to purchase from academicsuperstore. There is a link on their page "Who is eligible". You need to be a teacher or purchasing for an accredited school.

Thanks Lee for the headsup on the superstore. My sons girlfriend is a full time college student. She's agreed to buy the software for me. I know it's a little sneaky, but a good buy. Also notice on their site it lists full time students for buying. Ralph

The midi capabilities of Cool Edit Pro/ Audition are as follows...
You can insert midi files into your project. Your editing is limited to transpose, tempo and selecting which midi instruments the midi channels feed. You cannot record midi itself with the program.
You can use Midi MTC sync, master or slave if you have external hardware recorders.
You can select incoming midi notes or controllers for remote control of the Transport and a selection of mixer/editor functions.
CEP does not support software midi synths as Sonar does.
This is very limited compared to Sonar, but then again CEP has the full whack of audio editing functions that Sonar lacks as well as an integrated Mp3pro encoder that is not just a demo (Sonars mp3 is a demo).
One big downer I have with CEP is that its FX plugins are in its own format - neither DX or VST, therefore the FX are only available in CEP. It does support 3rd party DX plugins but not VST.
The automatable DX8 plugins that Sonar has are not supported.
A happy studio has both Sonar and CEP.

BTW, I believe sonar 3 PE comes with full version of mp3 encoder... never tried it yet though...

ive got homestudio 2002 and cool edit pro 2.0 since i dont use midi im gonna go with c.e. its much easier to use to me
