Yeah, the CEO of Rode does look like kind of a tough bugger in the ads, doesn't he? :)

Thanks alot guys! After after reading this I changed out the tube in my M9 too and it blew it up and it's ruined now! This is all your fault!

I'm kidding.. I'm kidding... It sounds great! Much better than the stock tube sounded!

You guys rule! :)

The US-made CAD mics are made about 15 minutes from where I grew up. My fiancee's grandmother worked for them for about 50 years. Thats all I have.

Phosphene,

Dude I need to keep up on my A.D.D. meds :) Sorry I didnt notice your question. I used a drum loop unfortunately. The bass however, I tracked an Eden cab with the M9 on it. This kicked butt. I also used the DI on my DRS-1 preamp, and blended to taste. I didnt need to compress as hard this time. My best bass tone yet.

Great samples by Musical5 & Teacher. A lot of talent hangs out on this board. I thought the high end was incredibly sweet on both samples. My dealer (music store, not drug) told me about the new M9 as a vocal microphone. I'm giving it some serious thought. Meanwhile, I'm going to rent a TLM103 for my upcoming project.

Thanks, guys!

Teacher--

how do you approach recording hip-hop tracks? I have some rather talents folks after me to recording some of their stuff, but I don't really have much of a idea where to start. And this sounds niiice... any pointers would be appreciated.

I just bought a CAD M9 Tube microphone, and have been using it on vocal tracks.

So far, I'm very happy with it. It's better on my voice than the other microphones I've tried (AKG C414B ULS, AKG C1000, Shure SM57, and Samson C03). (The AKG C1000 is also a great vocal microphone, and darn cheap, which shocked the heck out of me). It's got lots of "tube tiz", but I haven't needed to de-ess any vocal tracks yet. My best results so far have been singing extremely close with a pop filter screen, and not engaging the high pass filter on the mike, then removing the low frequencies with a high pass filter on the track.

One issue: the power supply makes noise. I tried different plugs in my house until I finally plugged it into the power conditioner power bar that I use for my computer and monitors. Then it was decently quiet--quieter than the Samson C03 (which is a fairly noisy solid state 19 mm condenser), but still quite a bit noisier than the AKG C414B ULS (which is very quiet). It's not the kind of noise you could use a noise reduction plugin on, either; rather, it's kind of a swirling noise sound, like it's picking up RF signals. When I engage the 16 dB pad, the noise floor doesn't diminish, and of course the noise increased as I increased the preamplier gain, so I wouldn't use the pad unless absolutely necessary.

I'm going to give it a serious try on acoustic guitar, too. First impressions after a quick test were good--warm and inviting tone without a hint of harshness.

I guess I'll be looking for replacement tubes next, to get some different colouration options in the tone. I'm hoping to get a warmer and fatter tone from farther away.

I paid a lot more than Musical5 did, but I still think it's one of the best deals in tube microphones around.

Lance,

My power supply makes no noise at all. I can only guess that yours has an issue. You may want to look into it.

funny you guys re started this thread- Just fininshed tracking a session (must sleeep...) with a sort of jazzy indie rock group and I tried the M9 on kick - I had a Audix D6 inside the kick drum (he had no front head) and the M9 a couple feet out. Boom! blending the two together was amazing. Btw - had no noise issues with my power supply. What kind of sound are you getting? a hum?

Thanks for chiming in about the power supply. It sort of sounded like radio interference--a swirling kind of background noise, but it went away almost completely once I plugged it into the power conditioner.

Sweet sounding microphone, maybe a new classic. That's awesome it works well for front of kick miking. It's not quite as warm for miking at normal distances (6" to 12") as I had hoped. I think a replacement tube is in order...

The old RCA I used sounds great 6-12" away. I dont recall how it sounded stock. I just know it sounds great now.
