I just won an M9 on ebay for $175. Im stoked about it and Im already thinking of swapping the stock tube for a better one. I hear it makes a big difference. I have a number of old RCA 12ax7's that work. Would this be better or do I need to spring for a Mullard?

Thanks

Can't comment on the M9, but I think it sounds just fine with the stock tube. I ain't no tube expert though...experiment and let us know bro!

I GOT a M9 changed the stock tube to a Telefunken ECC83 12ax7(i think i got the tubes off ebay so who knows) but with them i noticed the mic sounded much 'phatter' in the lows and more aggressive in the mids, while the stock tube is more laid back and 'thinner'...IMO the telefunken tube is good for lead verses while the stock would be better for Background vox or something less up front. so overall i'm happy with it cuz i do rap primarily which is almost always aggressive and in your face

Well I got the mic, and it sounds freaking amazing. Of course the true test will be when Im mixing a project that I used it on. So far I like it a lot more than my AT4050 and my C1. Its so smooth. No sillbance issue on my voice at all (and I do have issues). Ill swap the tube out tonight and see if it changes anything.

The M9 is the best value in tube mics out there.

Now you gotta hear a VSM... :)

then a VX2... :)

It's not fair u got an AMAZING deal on that CAD M9...please samples man or I'll melt! :D

I love mine. I didn't get quite as good a deal (I got mine new when 8th street was selling them for $279) but it's a killer mic even at the current price. Fletcher has posted several times about the M9 and what a nice mic it is.

Is swapping the tube tough to do?

It takes about 1 min. Just unscrew the 4 back screws and pop off the cover. Remove tube, add tube, re-screw, done.

Warren,

I agree. Actually, I think the three CAD tube mics are great values at each of their price points, in particular the VX2. Although when it came out it listed for about $2,000 (or more), they are easily found new for about $1,200 and used for $800 to $900. Leaving aside FET mics, the only other tube mics that I would consider being in the same league as the VX2 (in this price range) are the AT 4060, the ADK TT and perhaps the ADK a48.

Yup, but the VX2 gets you two capsules. :)

Dejacky,

Heres a quick test using the M9 on all instruments but the drums. I also mic'd the bass cab with it.

Oooooh... the folks at Rode aren't going to like me. I'm currently saving up for a K2 but now I'm not so sure. I could get an M9 a lot sooner -- and how often will I really need multiple patterns?

Very nice tune. The M9 definitely "works" for your voice. For $175 bucks you scored BIG time!

Also, on one of the forums at the CAD site a poster writes about recording a lot of mandoline and acoustic guitar with various CAD mics. The M9 sounds great on that mandoline. What was your recording chain? Effects? DAW, or otherwise?

Kelly,

Thanks for the compliment on the tune. Its in the rough stages still. I was thinking of the K2 myself. I just thought for $175.00 Ill try it and sell it, if I didnt like it. I had to cut at 50HZ and 500 to make it work for my vox. Im enjoying the lack of sillibance, while still remaining airy. I use a Phoenix Audio DRS-1, RNC, and A Kurzweil Rumour for my A/D, into Sonar. Im with you on the need for multi-patterns. I never use em. I still have the AT4050, just incase. But I cant see using that much except for electric guitar cabs now. The M9's go pretty cheap on Ebay. I do recommend it.

Yeah, the CEO of Rode does look like kind of a tough bugger in the ads, doesn't he? :)

He looks like he drinks Yak and smokes Bidis and wants to fight ala Jack Dempsey.

I agree on the "space" on the recording... sounds pretty good. I've been looking for a tube mic....(T3, K2) Still looking, but I'll throw the CAD into contention.

Justin do you care to elaborate on your drum/bass sound? Just wondering...I'm still working on mine and need some tips...
