I think my family ordered me a pair for my birthday...I've heard some good things about them...I'll probably use them for overheads and vocals...Any opinions? What's the sound you generally get out of these? I am using MXL990s for ohs now, so I'm betting these'll be a step in the right direction regardless.

Much more neutral sounding than the 990. Great low end response - you will be pleased on OH, as they will give a great tom sound. At first, you may miss the "brightness" of the 990, but you will find things recorded with the M177 to sit in the mix much better, imo.

I completely agree. :)

I also agree. I have 2 of them. They are an extremely useful tool. 5 times the mic of a 990! The low end is phenomenal and they are very balanced across the spectrum. The low end rolloff and -20db pad are also very useful for close micing.

Thanks guys. Sounds like just the kind of mic I need. Neutrality means broader function!

Ditto on all the compliments for the M177. I never regretted getting a pair. Really nice for OH, voice, guitar, reeds---and they have a nice noise spec and electronics and yes, it comes though in the mix. They are even more of a bargain while they're on sale now ($100). They're keepers!

Well they ordered me ONE, but if it's as nice as you all make it out to be...I mean, a truly functional and not just passable mic at such a low price...I'm buying another one.

Good info here for M177! I pressume M179 got the same character except it has variable pattern. Thanks!
