After a lot of reading, it seems that never is heard a discouraging word about either of these for instrument and vocal use.

In fact I was about to order an E300(2) because I thought it was half price of the 414. Much to my surprise there is only about $285.00 difference between the two: E300=$1125 and 414=$1410 (Canadian). At that point I am wondering if I should just go with the 414. From what I've read, though, people are really happy with the CAD. What does a guy do, if money isn't the issue? And no, I can't try them out.

If it was AKG 414 TLII vs. CAD E-300 or 350, I'd choose (very generally speaking) the CAD for spoken and sung vocals and amplifiers, the AKG for various classical instruments. I've never had personal experience with the new XLII or 300^2.
