Cables messing with sound?

I recently bought an old AudioPro board off someone. It's a nice board and the pre's seem pretty clean to me. But I'm trying to record my drums right now. I have a Shure PG48 as an overhead, and a RadioShack mic for my kick and RadioShack mic for my snare. The sound sucks ass, obviously they are not very good mics, but my Behringer 802a was giving me a better sound. Like, it's noticeable suckage, the snare sounds like it's off etc. I'm wonder if it's the cables, like for the RadioShit mics I have extensions using guitar cables and stuff. I put on only the overhead and I got a good sound, but obviously, as an overhead, your not picking up the drums that well by itself, but my snare doesn't sound like it's off. So when I raise faders for the snare and kick it sounds shitty. I need a job to buy some decent mics, but I'm wondering are all these cheap cable extensions fucking with my sound?

radio shack probably aren't the best cables around, but you may or may not notice a difference from switching. don't be suckered into buying Monster or any other super overpriced cables.

Well I don't know what the heck I did, but I fixed it anyway. I'm getting good sounds for what I have, now if only I had decent mics...

you want bullshit? these claims are from from Monster Cable's website:

Sigma Retro™ Gold Interconnect Cables

Ultra-high purity 99.999999% strand copper construction for the purest and most detailed midrange.
Super MultiTwist™ construction rejects audio bandwidth distortions for greater clarity and imaging.
Two MicroFiber® wound networks provide better isolation of magnetic fields for quick, tight bass.

Performer 500 Speaker Cable

Magnetic Flux Tube® for improved bass response and more natural sonic characteristics.
Increased conductor area transfers all the amplifier's power to your speakers.

and they have special instrument cables for JAZZ vs. ROCK ?!?!!? yeah, that seems right. you don't want any of those jazzy electrons getting the wrong kind of vibe from the cable. they're very picky.

If you ever walk into a studio that doesn't have Super MultiTwist™ construction on all of it's cables, turn and run. Real fast. Once I had a recording guy tell me that you don't even need Super MultiTwist™ construction to get a killer sound. I think I almost peed myself from laughing at him so hard. It's hard to even think about the days before Super MultiTwist™ construction. When I think of all the audio bandwidth distortions that snuck through back then, and the clarity and imaging that was lost...Tragic. Simply tragic.

Oh, and once I tried to play a country song on guitar using a "grunge" specific guitar strap and a "jazz" specific guitar cord. I don't even think I have to tell all of you what a disater that was (even though the cord did have Super MultiTwist™ construction). Sometimes there's things even Super MultiTwist™ construction can't save...

haha!!!

i bought a cheap knockoff cable once that was marked "Multi SuperTwist" construction. it was supposedly a Rock cable, but i tried it, and all the Rock clarity and imaging was gone. i can't say i have golden ears, but i didn't hear any audio bandwidth distortion while i was playing a few Blues scales, so maybe it was just mislabeled.
