So i bought a pair of akg c1000s mics, figured they'd make a good addition, but went the stupid route and didnt listen first, just bought them (249 for a new pair on ebay) because it seemed a great deal.

Anyway, from what i read on these forums, many seem to dislike this mic, and I'm just wondering what people do like them for, I'd love to hear some suggestions and things to try from people more experienced than I..... maybe that can help me decide (quickly) whether or not to try and send them back slash resell them.

Appreciated

First, try your new C1000S's on everything you've got... really, try them... try them on every instrument, drum, amp, voice you can... listen really good and take notes... forget about everything you've heard or read about the C1000S and make up your own mind of what you like the mics on and not... a lot of times rummors aid belief decisions rather than knowledge from experience... if you already have the mics, play with them.

And the real answer to your question is... some people like the AKG C1000S and some don't... for example, Harvey doesn't like the C1000 and Track Rat likes the C1000 on snare.

yeah.....

yeah, i'm going to do just that.....try *everything* i can mic.....

i know mackie doesnt make the best pres, but i'll be running through a mackie 24:8 i'm getting at the end of next week for 1125 usd......cant complain, with a meter bridge......

was reading a couple of other posts, think i'm going to get an m201 and two ev 634a's as well....realized that among the few mic's i have around there no omni's.....dont even have experience with them.....and after that, it's until next month where i'll be squeezing mic purchases out of whatevers left from 16 ch of computer input and a uad1..........

still, lately its like a dream come true......i'm 22 and have been drooling over these things since i was 12.....almost tempted to smash my behringer 602a if it werent for its handy on stage usage.

blah

I've got a huge pissing match a while ago because I said that a good engineer can make a Grammy Award winning record with just C1000's.

You can have good results on saxophone, trumpet, percussion, snare, toms, and guitar and bass amps, to name a few. I didn't like them on OH, piano, violin and acoustic guitar, it also isn't a great vocal mic.

IMHO the C1000 is too expensive though, because there are better mics for less money.

Happy hunting.

My opinion precedes me. :D I wouldn't recommend folks to BUY these mics but if you already have them (like me :( ) they do work pretty well there. There decent in front of an amp too.

He already has them... and I own two myself.

Have fun... and please let us all know what you think about the C1000S after you've had a chance to play with them for a while.

Thanks,
Don

Yes, I wouldn't actually go buy a pair - They are very "brassy" sounding mics, so they do tend to work well on "brassy" sounding instruments such as... You know... Brass. And yeah, hi-hat would probably also be a nice place for them.

Personally, I think they do best on ebay. :D

I've had ok results with mine on snare, but not on any kind of vocals. I don't know why AKG seem so convinced it's a great mic for backing singers. The problem is that I seem to get nicer results with my Sennheiser e835 on snare, so the C1000S is kinda redundant.

well i'll have them in like 2 hours, and i'll start throwing them on everything around, play with ideas. Friend of mine packed up his drums last night, which is a shame, there was a lot to experiment with there. He'll bring em back down tonight or tomorrow however. They were sold as a twin pack and I thought "oh, maybe those would make nice overheads." And, although i haven't tried them out on anything or formed my own opinions/tastes about them at all, i have a good feeling about people being right, and them not making good OH's.

So thats my next mission, some OH's, and another 635a, just got one mail order.... overheads man, that seems to be a pain in the butt discussion thats been done around here.......I mean, i can spend decent money on OH's .....i'm thinking like, ksm141's, AkG C451's, Crown CM-700, or maybe two decent ldc's.......seems everybody talks about the oktavas, the nt5, the c4's, and the b5's and what not to death, but the "midrange" 500-1000 dollar OH's dont get much comparison.

Or, any good suggestions for cardiod/omni overheads would be amazing.....i think omni would help the mics be versatile for a lot of other things, such as a friend of mine thats wanted to record flute stuff for quite a while. Thats kind of why the ksm141 seems a good candidate......but hey i'm open to suggestions, wanna get a nice pair of OH's, worth it to me.

thanks guys, appreciate the feedback

My favorite overhead mics are Josephson C42's and AKG C451's... and for those on a tight budget I recommend the Oktava MC-012's.

Budget overheads, Octava MK-012's (get all the capsules and you'll be armed to the teeth).
Another dandy is the AT-4033's. Mid sized diaphram seems to work pretty well on overheads.
My fav, Earthworks. I have a pair of SR-71's that are killer. YMMV.

I'm using the C451/CK1's since 1992 for OH and I'm still very happy with them.
The old 451 is also a great hat and ride cymbal spot mic.
