Yup. I noticed that. Ordered a set Saturday night, arriving day after tomorrow. :D

i wonder why they are not going to making BX8 anymore... huh.. a new ones is comming?
or they are trying to get rit off the bad stock? dont think so...
maybe a new one is comming

Interesting that I haven't seen a similar price break for the BX5s, which now sell for more than the larger BX8s? Strange marketing plan indeed.

what's the consensus on the BX8s vs. the Wharf 8.2a?

which is better for mixing? for tracking? for mastering?

i'll be damned if i have to read through that 20 page thread again - someone help a brother out!

=)

BX8 Blowout

Yep, $279.00 tax free, and free shipping. Ordered mine yesterday. I had originally planned on the BX5's untill I saw the BX8's for $20.00 less, seemed like a no brainer. Used sets on ebay are still going for over $350.00. I hope I like them, these will be my first real monitors. I just hope there not too powerful for my little apt. studio. :)

I'm going to guess it's just overstock. They seem pretty big... I haven't got mine yet but the shipping weight is 58 pounds...!

most 8in speakers are big and heavy ^_^"
overstock... haha.. well... donno about that

NICE!!!

i almost jumped at the $299 price.......glad i didn't. i've been using the SP5B's for a couple years now and they just don't have the low end that i'd like. they're great for acoustic guitar and vocals, but for bass and kick, i'm having to "guesstimate" a little more than i'd like.

looks like i'm gonna have to get me some of these BX8's, then, since they're at that "can't beat it with a stick" price.

the question is what to do with the 5B's, though.....keep em as a 2nd reference that i already know, or put em on ebay?

cheers,
wade

From everything I've heard and read, I think you'd have a better monitoring set-up by adding the SBX sub to your 5Bs, which would run roughly the same money. If you do some searching, you'll find that the BX5/sub set-up has received very positive reviews across the board--actually quite a bit better than I've seen for the BX8s, overall.

Best,

J.

6,8,4..12

summary of some notes-
Nearfield Monitoring and why the smaller speakers are better?

Problem:
typical "home" recording rooms have high risk of wall & window noise alias reflections being added into the sound. (bad) not hearing just the music but also the reflections from your walls which can confuse mixing decisions.

Fix:
To eliminate the rooms unwanted reflections Nearfield Monitoring is
common practice. Nearfield= Listener is ~3-4ft from speakers.

Question:
Why not a 12" Nearfield woofer?4"?6.5"?8"?

Speaker "dispersion" is the critical issue.
Distance vs. Diameter.

Dispersion is a physics issue- just the way it is...no getting around this.
FACT:20-Hertz tone creates a 57-foot long wave
and a 20-kHz tone is 0.057 feet (0.684 inches).
FACT:dispersion characteristics of a speaker is fundamentally determined by a combination of the
1)wavelength it's producing and
2) the physical size (diameter) of the driving element
(woofer, cone, dome, etc.).
3)As the wavelength of the sound begins to approach the size of the driver's radiating surface, the dispersion pattern begins to narrow appreciably, until the driver is radiating more like a spotlight(focused) than a floodlight (un-controlled).

-Dispersion Pattern narrows faster on a smaller diameter speaker due to wavelength reaching drivers radiating surface faster.
(narrow pattern=good=focused)

Thats a fancy explanation for why
LIVE ROCK CONCERTS DON'T USE 4" WOOFERS
and PRO Recording studios don't have 15" subs bolted
to their consoles as Nearfileds?

Speaker Dispersion man, can you dig it???
DISTANCE vs DIAMETER....

> Whats best 8" vs. 6.5" vs. 5" vs. 4"?
Depends on our listening distance and speaker dispersion.
(& I guess our ears?all other factors being equal?) fhk i don't know!

but I'll bet 5/6.5" is standard Nearfield probably because
3-4ft is standard Nearfield distance...it's physics.

Extreme example Headphones and 8"...difference is Diameter/ Distance
from our ears.
