Buying microphones and hoping for reccomendations

I know this has surely been done before but please offer your reccomedations and/or opinions on this list..

Up to now I have only been borrowing microphones and am now ready to purchase my own. The application is a small 16 track adat/DAW personal studio for putting together quality demos for local bands and my own..


1) AT 4033 (vocals and ambient)
3) SM57s (toms,snare, cabs)
2) SM58s (overheads for drums)
1) Audix D3 (miking guitar cabs)
2) Sennheisser E602 (kick drums, bass cab)

Has anyone compared the AKG D112 (kick drum/bass cab) mic to the Sennheisser E602 ??

This puts me around $1400 w/ tax.. is this a wise investment or could I do better with a about the same amount of money? Thanks..

About the vocal mic, I tried a bunch of them in that general price range. I liked the AT4033, but I also thought that for about $100 more the AT4047 was awesome. I paid $479 (at BH Photo in NYC) and I thought it was as good or better than anything for $900 or less.

There are much better options 58's as overheads in your price range. For $100 or so more you could get a pair of rodes. As for kick drum mics I'd choose the d112. I think it's a better sounding mic and is a standard for kick drum micing

Keep In The Front Of Your Mind

When making your selection, think about trying to purchase all-around, general, and versatile mics until you have quite a comfortable mic cabinet where you can add more "specialty" mics to your collection.

Think in terms of maybe:

Audio Technica AT4033
matched-pair of Crown CM-700s
Audio Technica ATM25 or AKG D112 or Shure Beta 52 or Senn. E602
Shure SM57 galore
