Hello Folks,
This was previously posted in a really bad, (not that this is good), version - the comp had mixed to 5.1 and I'd only grabbed the L&R from that.
The drums/percussion are an issue - being mono & combo'd with a guitar line.
The vocals are newly recorded 2 overlapping main vocals & a pair of b/vox. The B vox are the same take but from 2 sep/ mics. I've EQ & effected them to differentiate but one is sticking out & the other appears lost. I think the EQ spike at about 3kh I gave one has made it more apparant in the soundstage.
There are L & R semi acoustic guitars, 1 distorted guitar in the middle, the vocals as mentioned. bass straight up the centre, and drums doubled & one of these faux stereo panned about as a gab fill for the present.
Any ideas?
 
First thing I noticed right off is that the vocal sits WAAAY better in the mix. The drums are sitting much better too, despite the fact that they are doubled with a guitar track. You did a pretty good job of hiding the fact that they are mono.

I think you can be proud of this.
 
I don't really have any ideas other than the whole mix seems kind of bright. The vox have a slight midrangey "megaphone" effect. Considering what you have to work with, I think it's pretty good. Just smooth the vox and sit em back in the mix a little. :)
 
With respect to the brightness.. I was fiddling with the eq in WMP and found that the mix (overall especially vox) seemed to benefit from a 5 db tweek on the 125 and 250 hz. And although a tweak on the 8K helped vox, the cymbals got a little crispy.

I love the bass on your mixes, clear and thumpy, never muddy. :) I work to get mine to sit right...with time I guess...

Is this your original RA guitar - pre-break in or no? 1990! How about an additional guitar track using your newest No.1 guitar? I'm looking forward to hearing it.

I think generally, this is the best recording of Terry's vocals I can remember (both the level and tone and mix). :cool: The vocal performance is top notch as usual. ;) Are you going direct into Cakewalk here on vocals?

Interesting thing about all your work is originality.
Your voice and your guitar sound are unique. But there is more!
Scales you are singing through are very special. Very unique style.
Very recognizable. This song is very good.
Mix is on its way up. You are almost there. I don’t have much to say what is not already said.
Take a closer look to the cymbals. Someone said about crispy sound. I don’t find another word so let’s call them crispy.

I try those tweaks on the vox specifically.
The bass sound is pure luck & a tweaked preset on a yahama fx500.
It's the original guitar! If I have luck securing the drummer's drummer I'll need to add another guitar track to replace the distorted one up the middle so I'll do just that.
Terry's vox worked well because he's singing well at present and we used his sennheiser mic right up in front coupled with an MSH1 a couple of feet back and to the side - both into a Bluetube (old version) preamp & then into Cakewalk. In the box I added a little Blockfish vintage vocals compression (part of the free fishfillets suite - you need a VST wrapper in cakewalk though it's free from spin I think) & upped the gain just a little.
As we did two sep takes of different parts of the vox he was more relaxed & had more space to stretch things. It's also a real take and not a reconstituted M3.
Thanks mate - this is coming on well at present though I do believe a couple of little gems may soo be added that will be the aural equiv of fairy dust.

Terry became inspired after watching a doco on Dylan around the time of the Folk Festival he annoyed Pete Seger at. There's a Dylanesque nature to the delivery and phrasing but it's not too dominant I feel.
There's a possibility that some real drums may make an appearance so the cymbal issue may be resolved but I still tweak about a bit - thanks for the encouragement.
 
Sounding much better Ray. I still think it's a little bright overall, but this newer mix is definitely on the right track.

I don't have too much to add apart from the guitars seem to lack some warmth and are a little too jangly. Maybe just a little tweak, bring the high-mids down a tad maybe?? Apart from that the mix sounds fine on the speakers that I am listening on. :)
Very Bob Dylanish style vocals on this one but still remains original!

Yeah the whole mix seems a little lacking in the mids - I ran a maximiser over it after reading your post & with it set to some mids it really did warm up the guitars & the rest. I'll try to replicate that in the mix and avoid the max if I can.

I'll post the latest remix tonight - it has a solo by a guest STAR, well star around these parts anyway.
