I'm now at the stage of mastering, real close to burning my first CD. :) I'm just wondering usually what brand of CD-R you guys burn to. Occasionally I would see some "Radio Shack" or "Comp USA" brand CD-R's on sale, and they are significantly cheaper then say "Imation" or "Fuji". Are those cheapies good? Or do they suck?

Anyone? Thanks!

I buy unbranded in the most part. I get 100 for £20 and they work fine for me; no problems yet.

If you aren't burning many (I usually do at least one a day, 'cus I can back up data..........

IGNORE THIS FROM HERE*(the days take(s) in case I need it in the future), or say a drum track layed over 8 tracks so I can free up other tracks whilst still maintaing the seperate tracks to mix))*

.......from my D16) then buy say 10 branded ones at a time. it depends how important the CDR's are to you. If this is proffesional/semi-proffesional CD's then use the most expensive you can afford.

So for reference use unbranded and if your worried or have lots of money use branded.

A lot of cd recorders are factory calibrated to work best with a specific brand of disc (or several brands). I suggest you go to your manufacturer's web site and see what they recommend.

In order of preference...

Mitsui...
Mitsui...
Mitsui...

IMHO...best,warmest sound with the best CD player compatability out there...

Thanks for the tip a year ago Emeric... ;):D

btw...I burn to cheaper Kodak Golds or TDK's (price) until I get the mix right. Final product = Mitsui.

I gave up on Imations and all no-name brands...too many compatability problems.

Best price I could find on Mitsui 74 min Audio CD's in JewelCase...

www.mediasupply.com

$1.18 a piece when you buy 50....

...not too bad for top notch stuff.

Will the Mitsui, TDK, or Kodak CD-Rs play on DVD players? Zip mentioned some compatability problems with the cheaper CD-Rs and I've been using Imation and other cheapies and none of them will play on my DVD player. So is this just more compatability problems with the cheap CD-Rs or will some DVD players just not play CD-Rs period?

Say WHAT???????????????????

Er, ummm.... Zip.... buddy.......... "warmest"?????????????????

Are you seriously suggesting that one brand of CD-R is going to sound warmer/brighter/cleaner/nicer/whatever than another??????????????????? We're aren't talking cassettes here!!!

Hold on there Brucie...:)

I hesitated before I posted that for this very reason...let me explain a BIT...

First I DO hear a difference between DYE TYPES...

Burn an azo, a cyanine and a phtalocyanine and you tell me. What I am trying to say is an cyanine (most common) sounds different than the azo or phthalocyanine...

I'm not talking major and I'm NOT talking GREENING (remember that post??hehe) but there is a slight difference in the sound...especially in the lower frequencies...

That's my only point. Burn something on a 15 cent generic cyanine dye CD then burn a Mitsui and you tell me.

Now...that said - don't jump down my throat...;):D:D hehe

wheeeeeeeewwww......(zip wipes sweat off brow...)

I was hoping someone would support my position...:D:D

unbranded??

sorry -- what does 'unbranded' indicate?

thanks,

spwee

my guess is ...

... something like CompUSA CD-Rs ...

A Kodak CD-R would be branded ...

well....not really

Unbranded indicates a PLAIN face(top) to the CD...no writing at all...no fancy little lines for your magic marker...

Unbranded CD's are great for - labelling or silkscreening...since nothing else will show through underneath...

ps - Mitsui sells unbranded CD's and they are just a bit better than COMP USA's....;) :D

thanks, zip...

...kind of what I suspected.

I've been using Maxell branded CDR's and have had no problems at all with them. I did get the ones that specify 'Music' on them. Is there any merit to that designation? I use them for burning CD's from my 16 track recorder, but not for data backup.

spwee

yes Both Maxwell and Memorex CD-R's with 'music CD-R on them are good

same question!

spweedah, I've got the same question.

Regular CDR and "music" or "audio" CDR ... are they differently configured? Is the compatability a lot better with the "music" type?

And why are "unbranded" CDRs perceived (or in fact are) not as good as branded ones?

The difference is the DYE...sometimes...

Some "music" CD's I've seen use the azo type dye...it's the dark blue one.

Unbranded and cheap are two different things...

Many times cheap CD's (comp USA etc...) are unbranded because they are cheaper to produce...

The quality is in the dye type / method of manufacture / reflective surface etc....

It has NOTHING to do as to whether or not the are printed...

Cheap usually = cheap

Good usually = good

But hey!! I use some "cheapies" as I'm working through a mix...no sense in rocking through Mitsui's at over a buck a piece!!
