I've finally got a good mix of my Adat recording and I'm ready for mixdown. I'm wondering what is my best option for a mixdown deck? The burner on my computer (a sounblaster)? A new soundcard? Maybe an outboard burner like a Sony or Phillips? Also, I'm using a Mackie mixer and some Alesis effects along with mu Adat.

I realize this may be a nebie question, but please be nice. Werewolf is sensitive and doesn't want hims feelings hurt

Any help is much appreciated.

Are you going to have it mastered?

CD, DAT, and 1/4" half-track tape running 15-30 ips are the prefered formats.

As a matter of fact in most cases if you walk in to a mastering house with a 1/4" tape they will fall to their knees and kiss your feet. :D Unfortunately this is rarely done by home recordists anymore.

If you just want to make copies for friends and family, CD or cassette is fine.

I plan to mix it to cd. My mixes sound great through the monitor but come out like crap on cd. I'm wondering if it's my soundcard. which is a Sounblaster PC128. My cd copies come out sounding really gritty. I know someone who uses an identical studio setup, but mixes down to a stand alone Phillips CD burner, and those mixes sound just fine. You think it's the soundcard?

Stay away from Phillips burners! Hi BLERS (block error rates),incompatibilty with most audio CDR's and poor performance
make it a poor choice to for 2-track mixdowns.
If you're seeking a P.C based burner, check out the Plextor line of burners.
If stand-alone is your choice and not knowing your budget, mid-priced but quality outboard burners such as the Tascam CDRW700, which has 24 bit A/D/A convertors,auto-dig fade in/out
and the ability to burn Orange-book standards, the HHB CDR830
with same A/D/A conversion and similar features but also includes SCMS-free dig inputs. Both can be had at street $475 and make a fine addition to your gear.

BTW, what is your budget?

Thanks for the advice Mysterique! As for my budget, I'd like to stay within the realm of $200-500 realm. I'd really like to keep my computer as my 2 track mixdown. It's just more convenient and then I can use my editor to make minor adjustments. I went ahead and ordered the Audiophile 24/96. I hope that enhances the sound quality of what I send into my computer. I've been reading here for a year now what an excellent card it is, but I just never quite understood If I needed it for my purposes. I don't plan to use my computer to track record to, just for mixdown. Did I make a wise choice/investment?
-thanks

The audiophile is indeed an exellent choice.

If you intend to put a burner in your PC also have a look at the "Lite-On" range they are getting really good press in the UK and match the Plextors speed and reliability at a fraction of the price.

The only thing with the Audiophile is be careful with the drivers, some of early issues did not work very well with some chipsets i.e. VIA.
