hi - I'm still on Guitar Tracks 2 - limited, but the quickest workflow - for me - of anything I've tried.

project files are used by default to save space but they warn you that if there's a crash or reformat of hard drive, you will loose them. The alternative is bun files but they are more time consuming to create & larger (they contain all of the preject's information).

My question is: I do a weekly back up of my entire computer to an outboard hard drive - in the event of a crash will those files be fully restored even though they are project files - not bun files? Thanks!!

Are you backing up the audio files as well (.wav)?

If you're backing up both the project file and the underlying wave files, you should be fine.

thanks for the reply. There are no audio files - everything is in the project file format until I am ready to mix down to wav. This may be different from other higher end C.walk software...GT 2 is very basic. Anyway, sounds like I'm safe. Thanks.

There are no audio files
What do you mean there are no audio files? Are you doing MIDI only?

If you're doing MIDI only, then everything will be in the project file. If you are doing any audio work, then there has to be audio files.

The only difference between a project file and bundle file is that the bundle file contains the audio, while a project file does not. In a project file, the audio is in separate files, usually one for each take.

You're right - what I meant to say was no wav files. I do record audio...if fact there's no midi - GT 2 is not a midi host so it's all audio although in the project file format, not in wav format. So if audio is stored separately & it's only audio - how is the project file different from bun in this particular software?

Or the main question: if there is a crash but the whole thing was backed up to an outboard hard drive, if I restored the whole backup once the hard drive crash was fixed would I get everything back? I don't want to find out the hard way. Thanks again for listening.

I don't use Guitar Tracks, so I am not familiar with the program. However, I am still willing to bet $.50 that there are wave files being created. AFAIK that is the way all of Cakewalk programs work.

How do you know there are no wave files?

Most likely they are simply being stored in a different location than the project file. This was standard for some of Cakewalk's older projects. All the audio data from each project was stored in a single directory.

To answer your question, if you are backing up your entire hard drive (assuming you have just a single hard drive), once you restore it you should get everything back. This is true whether you are using bundle files (.bun or .cwb) or project files (.wrk or .cwp).

I won't argue - with all the posting you've done. I reread the manual & it's a little vague to me - it doesn't mention wav files but does say audio files are stored separately, as you said. As long as the whole hard drive is backed up it should work. Thanks again.

A lot of posts doesn't necessarily say you are smart... it only says you have a lot of free time. :D

However as far as Cakewalk is concerned, audio files = wave files.

I just found the audio folder + all the wav files!

I totally appreciate all this sharing & support on the web forums...
