Building strange percussion instruments a la Blue Man Group

Does anyone know of any guides, or have any tips regarding building one's own unique original percussion pieces? Particularly, if you have any advice about creating tuned pieces . . .

The newest issue of Modern Drummer has Jeff Tweedy (I think) from Wilco. He talks about building your own percussion pieces. Specifically, he gives instructions on how to modify a floor tom so that you can use your voice through a tube or something like that.

no..exaggeration. i was meaning a lame band with heavy guitar solos and weak head banging stepped in to play with them.
