Building panels for bass. Will this work?

Hey guys.

Anyone try building there own acoustic panels with Fiberglass insulation (Pink)?

If I stuff 2 or 3 layers (trying to compress it) into a 2'x4' box I build, will that help on the bass end or is that still only getting the mids and highs?

Roger, welcome to the wonderful world of trying to make you studio sound good and trying to spend as little money as possible. I have been here for about 3 months trying to soak up all the knowledge of John Sayers, Ethan Winer, Micheal Jones, C7sus, Knightfly like a peice of 4in 705. Here is the deal. Egg cartons, carpet on the walls all that crap is a waste of your time. YOU NEED FIBERGLASS. Your best freind is the rigid kind. easiest to work with and more compact. For your question to quote Ethan Winer. You need fiberglass. "the more the better" I asked the same question as you did and infact pretty much made the same thing you are looking at. I think if I am correct, you need like 6" of batting compared to 1" of rigid. You just gotta have a good chuck of fiberglass all in the right places to absorb the right things. ( thats my philosiphy) Anyway, I would give you all the links and stuff that they have all given me but I dont have a clue how to put that stuff in here. Just ask questions and listen to these guys and they will give you the straight answer. Good luck

Yes, that's the idea. As Tony said, rigid fiberglass is better because it's already compressed. And it's probably compressed "better" than you could do on your own. For the complete story see the Acoustics FAQ, second in the list on my articles page:

So, out of curiosity, how to you cram 6 layers of batting into a reasonable sized 2x4 box? More specifically, what do you use to cover the box and hold all the stuff in?

That's exactly why rigid fiberglass makes the most sense. But you can squeeze regular fiberglass. One way is to use heavy chicken wire or similar. Or you can stuff the fiberglass tightly into a plastic bag, or wrap plastic around it. Even though plastic is reflective, low frequencies pass right through it so it's fine for bass traps.

Ah, Mr Winer. (I say "MR." because I have read several of your articles over the last couple days and have been very impressed. :))

Just after I posted this, an email about the rigid fibergalss retailer arrived. I'll be checking out one of their locations.

Before that, I was thinking several layers of Fiberglass Pink sandwiched between two layers of 2'x4' chicken wire pulled tightly together (quilt pattern) with either wire tires or maybe small bolts with washers.

Next question. Can you "stack" rigid fiberglass? Someone was talking about having 2" RF and wondering where he could get thicker stuff. Can you stack two 2" panels to get a 4"?
