nah, it was easy...and free (well, except for the price of replacing my worn out drill bit). i just drilled two holes per side for the strings that hold the wires in place. finding a 13" set of snare wires was the hard part (it'd probably be easy to find them online, but i wanted an excuse to go some music stores).
you're right, marching snares are deep and they sound amazing. just make sure the 14 x 14 drum has solid lugs, because you're going to have to tune that thing up pretty tight to get anything resembling a snare sound. combine that with a couple songs worth of rimshots and that puts a LOT of stress on the lugs (actually, it's a lot of stress on the head and rims, too. but from my experience the lugs were the part that broke).
