building my own (slightly unusual) drumset

Well, I dont think its really supposed to be a joke, more of an unusual and creative drum set.
 
I've built my own kits...from raw keller shells and my own lugs etc... In Tim Brown's signature is DrumMaker, they deal with parts etc. Also goto www.ghostnote.net and sing up on the forums. I know your doing the "putting a bunch of different things together"...but I'd reccomend doing some re-finishing so everything looks good make sure they're all the same wood/grain direction lol! don't bother with that until you put the pieces together and determined that you like the setup.
 
both ways of doing it have advantages. i know absolutely nothing about building drums so i think i'm safer just getting the seperate drums from used shops.
 
my2cents is right, get your set up the way you want and THEN refinish lol. Well if you refinish it, its not really re-building... its more re-finishing :D and you can just use say a water based dye and a nice gloss finish...all really easy to do. :) If you WANT to go my way to make it look nice, I can help you out!
 
those huge drums are probably going to make normal cymbals look like splash cymbals. refinishing will be a nice touch. i see old marching snare drums fairly often (the type that were slung over the drummer's shoulder with a strap), so hopefully you won't have much of a problem finding the big drums you're looking for.

MAn, that drum set would be rad, although the broken symbols would probably sound like sheetmetal bring thrown at a wall.I love the idea though with the bass drums and the tom.
 
This is the most creative idea I have ever heard... Its expensive... but... wow... a gong as a ride... thats seriously amazing.

thank you very much. i might still try the gong as a ride thing but that'd be a lot of money. The idea behind the whole set is really just to try to get as close as i can to an explosion of sound. I'm a guitarist really, and i compose what i guess most people would call unusual folk songs... i love huge explosions of sound, weird and extremely distorted sounds, but mixed in with soft, folksy nylon string guitar and simple pop melodies. I originally was going to just go out and buy a normal drumset because i wanted a drumset to play on (i already knew how to play drums somewhat) but realized that usually i'm not looking for a typical drum sound in my songs. in all of my compositions drums are used to add to an explosion of sound that punches you in the chest rather than to keep a typical beat.
i still have not been able to go check out my local used music shop, and really i should probably make some more money first, but i'm still really excited about this. it's going to be really fun.

Go to the hardware store and pick up some steel trash can lids and some gold spray paint.
 
well.. it seems this idea is going to be harder than i thought. There are virtually no shops that carry used drums in Saint Louis, at least not that i have found, and I've called every store in the yellow pages. This will take longer than i thought - and its going to be even harder to find a used 28" bass drum. I really don't want to use ebay because i cant hear it but i might have to...

indeed, it'll be very difficult to find a used 28" bass drum. do you know any school music instructors? sometimes schools have music equipment sitting around unused, particularly schools with marching bands (they seem to change their drum equipment and uniforms every few years so they will match the football uniforms, which also tend to change every few years). a school music department might let you buy a drum, or even give it to you in exchange for a donation to the band fund.
