Ok, I'm thinking of using £17,000 (around $27,100) to make a recording studio.

I don't need to worry about acoustic treatment for now, just the equipment.

I want to be able to record a full band (full drum, bass, guitar etc.). I also want a good 32 channel mixer.

I'm thinking of having a couple of dynamic processors, pre amps and effects units (e.g. 2 or 3 compressors) which would be patched to the mixer with a patch bay.

I think I should have microphones covered, I'm going to get a shure drum mic kit, a couple of condenser mics and a few SM57's for good measure.

any help would be great :)

Well first off, welcome to the site!!!

Have you recorded anything before? It sounds like you have really done your research. Most of us here are on a poor mans budget so 27000 bucks is WAY out of our league.

What type of music are you looking to record?

Lets just say its rock....

You can't go wrong with an SM57...these work GREAT for micing guitar cabs/ various other things.

Mackie makes an awesome lineup of mixers

I have heard GREAT things about the M-audio octane preamp in conjuntion with micing your drums.

rackmount compressors/preamp etc... I dont have a whole lot of experience with.....dont have any of these.....

Lest say you actually ARE recording rock...sih or something along those lines. You would be surprised with the quality you would get with some decent mixing skills...etc.... IMO i dont think you need a 5-7-8 hundred dollar condensor....you can get by just fine with an SM7B....or even an SM58.

anywhoo im rambling....

Thats my 2 cents.

CHEERS!!!

With a budget that large and recording a full band, you do need to think about room treatment. Unless you want to sound like a garage band. Not that there's anything wrong with that. :)

Cheers for the help and the welcome :D

Yeah, I have recorded before. I've used some really nice studios before and am trying to build one myself.

I want to be able to record any type of music too, can be rock or hip hop, jazz and so on.

I'm not sure if many people have favorite mics, but mines an SM-57! Their great and cheap. I'll have a look at the SM7B, however I might look into getting a really nice condenser for really nice vocal recordings.

I've looked into Mackie mixers, however I really want a 32 ch mixer with great EQ and preamps. The one I was looking at was the SoundCraft Ghost LE (around $6,500) but I was told not to go for it, so I'm looking for a mixer around or more better than that one.

I will deffinatly look into the M-audio octane preamp, thanks for that suggestion.

Thanks!

Oh you've miss understood. I've got that bit sorted, this thread is just for getting some equiptment :)

Sorry about that.

Hey Megadude...

Noobiness is not a characteristic of the number of posts or amount of time someone's been here... you sound like you have some experience there - you might get better answers by posting specific questions in the other forums rather than this one, although there are a fair selection of experts that drop in here from time to time...

Luck.

This isn't completely true. N00bs still have to buy the beer and pizza on their first day. That's strictly based on post count. :D

A Midas Venice would be nice! Or a Yamaha PM series. Both could be found used both have great pres and great EQs the Yamaha would have more routing possibilities.
